Ex-Mythic CEO Mark Jacobs has announced the foundation of a new casual gaming enterprise: City State Entertainment.

Based in Fairfax, Virginia, Jacobs’ new outfit will create mobile and tablet titles for the casual market, Forbes reports.

“I’m tired of strings and being told what to do by other people,” Jacobs told Forbes. “We’re a very collaborative group where we talk about everything, and that’s what you need if you really want to be successful.”

Overview

Gears of War 3 (X360), as reported earlier this week sold more than three million copies in its opening week, to make it the biggest debut of the year and outselling its predecessor by more than a million copies. It is also the biggest opening for an exclusive on an Xbox platform that isn’t Halo. Gears of War 3 lead a strong week for both hardware and software, where the Wii is the only platform down week on week. There are eight debuts in the top 40, which is up from four last week. Software milestones this week: Gears of War 3 (X360) reaches three million in its opening week. Four games sold over 100,000, down from five last week, and the top 16 sold over 50,000, up from 13 last week.

Week on week sales are up for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, DS and 3DS, flat for the PSP and down for the Wii. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 232,000, which is up 10,000 (5%). Xbox 360 sales shoot up 86,000 (72%) to 205,000 units sold. The PlayStation 3 is up just 5,000 (3%) to 172,000. The Wii is the only platform down week on week as it drops just 5,000 (-5%) to 94,000. The DS is up only 4,000 (5%) week on week, as it sold 88,000 units this week. The PSP sold 74,000 units, which is the same as last week. Total week on week sales are up 100,000 (13%) to 865,000.

Year on year sales are down for every platform, except the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 is down 38,000 (-18%), the Wii is down 39,000 (-29%), and the Xbox 360 is up 13,000 (7%). The PSP is down 50,000 (-40%) and the DS is down a massive 225,000 (-72%). Total year on year sales are down 107,000 (-11%). [click to continue…]

Sony has warned that it expects the continuing weakening of the Euro to severely affect its finances, saying that the European economic crisis will have a “huge impact” on its business.

Because the technology giant exports so many of its goods to European territories, any weakening of the Euro has direct fiscal consequences. Should one of the EU countries currently teetering on the brink of defaulting on an international loan do so, the Euro would fall ever further.

“There are no countermeasures that we can take for the moment,” said Sony’s corporate treasurer Hiroshi Kurihara told Bloomberg. “There is a huge impact on our earnings.”

Ubisoft will launch survival adventure I Am Alive on PlayStation Network and XBLA this winter.

Engine and tech maker Unity has moved into Canada by acquiring animation technology start-up Mecanim.

The business will be renamed Unity Canada with all co-founders – Robert Lanciault, Sonny Myette and Pierre-Paul Giroux – remaining with the business.

“Seeing Mécanim animation technology tightly integrated in the Unity game engine is an exciting culmination of years of experience and development,” commented Unity Canada’s Robert Lanciault.

News: Epic Games: Next Unreal Engine in 2014

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has said he doesn’t expect the next version of the popular Unreal Engine to launch until 2014.

“I spend about 60 percent of my time every day doing research work that’s aimed at our next generation engine and the next generation of consoles,” Sweeney told IGN.

“This is technology that won’t see the light of day until probably around 2014, but focusing on that horizon enables me to do some really cool things that just aren’t practical today, but soon will be.”

Dundee’s University of Abertay, known for its commitment to games and the Dare to be Digital competition, may be merged with Dundee University.

According to ScottishGames both universities have already received government communications asking them to investigate the logistics of such a scheme.

It’s so far unclear how this could effect the institution’s comprehensive gaming curriculum.

News: Record numbers attend Eurogamer Expo

The Eurogamer Expo, which took place last week between 22 and 25 September, attracted a record number of visitors, with 34,500 attendees enjoying the event, including 2,000 press and industry figures.

Next year’s event has already been confirmed as running from 27-30 September at Earls Court, London.

“This year’s Eurogamer Expo was a massive success,” said Eurogamer co-founder and MD Rupert Loman.
