Have you ever seen The Last Samurai? Good news if you have: you’ve already caught up on the story of the upcoming Shogun 2 expansion Fall of the Samurai. It’s about an American coming to Japan in the 1800s to help teach them about guns and– yep, you’ve heard this one before. Even so, you should watch this trailer.

Now, if you pre-order this expansion, you’ll get one of three exclusive clans: the Saga clan, the Tsu clan and the Obama clan. Yeah, that Obama.

Max Payne 3 has entered bullet time, slowing the linear progression of events to the point that the game has shifted its own launch from March to May. This would be the second major title the publisher shifted out of March, with its XCOM shooter also moving into the next fiscal year, which begins April 1.

The delay is expected to have Take-Two report a net loss for the fiscal year ending March 31. The company previously expected a billion in revenue, but is reducing that estimate by $ 210-230 million.

That means for fiscal 2013 (ending March 31, 2014) Take-Two expects to launch: Max Payne 3, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and “other titles yet to be announced.” So, Take-Two expects us to only play Take-Two games over the next year. Understood.

Warner’s refused to comment this morning on apparent confirmation that a Vita version of Mortal Kombat is set to launch this spring.

A reader sent us a TwitPic yesterday which showed what appeared to be a press release from the publisher that confirmed the spring launch, adding it would come with additional gameplay features.

The release also included quotes from Netherrealm’s Ed Boon.

Warner told VG247 it didn’t “have any comment on the link,” which has since been removed from TwitPic.

The original Mortal Kombat released last April for PS3 and 360.

It’s also worth noting that Netherrealm was the first studio to actually publicly say it had what was then a PSP2 development kit back in September 2010.

New Dead Island DLC Will Star A Villain

by Salat on January 16, 2012 · 0 comments

Who is Dead Island‘s Ryder White I wouldn’t know, because I stopped playing before he showed up in the game. But I’m told he’s a villain, and that he’s kind of not a nice guy. That’s what I hear, anyway.

The next batch of Dead Island DLC will give you several hours in Ryder White’s shoes, which will presumably tell you all about why he’s such a dick. Hooray for backstory!

This new DLC will arrive in the States on January 31 for a mere $ 10. $ 10 for “several hours.” That’s pretty good, right? Right, if you like Dead Island, anyway.

For the 20th episode  the Minecraft Show, we had something special planned. Our boss, Mark Burnham, paid a visit to the Break HQ in LA, and so we had him join our bros on the show. But all is not well; Mark decided to institute new rules on the show: whoever screws up five time gets fired. Oh no! Now you have to watch the full show to see who gets fired. Hehe.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson has revealed via a tweet that Minecraft now has 20 million registered users.

He said that of the 20,121,024 users that have signed up for the game, 23.33% of them have actually bought it. That’s 4.67 million people.

Free users can still play Minecraft but are given limited access, with only the Minecraft Classic build being accessible. Paid users have access to the game’s survival mode, and various other features like hunting, and picking apples from trees.

Minecraft crossed the 4 million sales mark back in November. Persson has stepped down from his position as lead developer of the game citing “rest and new projects” as the reason.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

The latest set of preliminary data has arrived from Japan. For the second week of January, all hardware typically drops off sharply. Software dropped off this week as well – only two games sold over 50,000 this week, compared to two games selling over 100,000 last week and Marioland a hair away from 100,000 as well.

1) Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Masou Kishin II – Revelation of Evil God (PSP) – 70,000

2) Mario Kart 7 (3DS) – 59,000

3) Super Mario 3DLand (3DS) – 47,000

4) Monster Hunter Portable 3G (3DS) – 45,000

5) Inazuma Eleven Go Shine / Dark (3DS) – 25,000

6) Musou Orochi 2 (PS3) – 24,000

7) Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) – 23,000

9) Just Dance Wii (Wii) – 20,000

9) Shinrei Camera: Tsuiteru Techou (3DS) – 20,000

10) Monster Hunter Portable 3 (PSP) – 16,000

12) Go Vacation (Wii) – 9,000

12) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) – 9,000

14) Kirby’s Return to Dreamland (Wii) – 8,000

14) Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Ketteiban (Wii) – 8,000

15) Frontier Gate (PSP) – 7,000

In addition to the games above, Mario Kart Wii (Wii), Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Wii Party (Wii), Magician’s Quest: Oshare na Mahou Tsukai (DS), and Inazuma Eleven Strikers 2012 Xtreme (Wii) should all end up in the final top twenty data as well.

The big question for this week is what level the new hardware will hold at this week. Vita and 3DS sold almost 300,000 units last week. Hardware sales will typically fall to 40-55% of the first week of January in the second week of January. Anything outside that range on the positive side is higher than expected demand, while anything outside that range on the negative side is lower than expected demand. All hardware last week increased in the first week of January besides PS2 and Vita, so don’t be surprised if Vita ends up below 15,000 units this week. 3DS in contrast will likely still be over 100,000 units this week, which is a strong figure for just about any time of year in Japan (the US equivalent is like selling 250,000 – 300,000 units a week early in November when there is only a modest seasonal lift at play).

Barring some kind of unexpected collapse, 3DS should be able to top 5m in Japan in February, and sell through over 1m units in January to March 2012. Games should continually be announced for 3DS starting perhaps at Nintendo’s financial briefing in a couple weeks, as it’s been a long time since anything has sold 5m units in a year in Japan as 3DS will from February 26, 2011 to mid-February 2012. DS did sell 4.9m in the year to June 2008, but that was almost four years ago already. Wii, PS3, and PSP never got to even 4m units a year in Japan at any point, while DS once topped 8m units in a year.

Looking ahead, PSP, PS3, and Wii don’t have much software coming in the short term that is ‘big’. More importantly, Vita has nothing that looks relevant either for months, so the big question is where Vita bottoms out in early 2012 before PSP / PS3 / X360 games begin moving to Vita later in the year. Vita is in the classic chicken and egg scenario though at the moment – software can’t sell well because the base is still tiny, and base is still tiny because the software isn’t selling well (yet). Assuming Vita does somehow get to 2m+ by the end of 2012, it should be fine despite the slow start.
