News

As our own Ben Richardson once put it, the function of video games at their heart, more often than not, is to make players feel bad-ass. I have to say that I very much agree with that assessment, but while most games give you some manner of bad-assery, other games take things over the top to a degree that borders on godlike.

Prototype 2 is heading for consoles next week and PC this summer, and from what we’ve seen of the game so far, its sole purpose for existing is to convey unto players as much bad-assery as possible in a digital medium. But it won’t be out until next week — which means you’re going to need to curb your desire for curb-stompage and phenomenal powers in some other way. We’ve got a list of games that can sate your hunger for punching guys so hard, their faces explode. Check them out below, in no particular order.

Prototype

It seems only right that we start with Prototype, since it’s getting a sequel on Tuesday that has gone out of its way to make it possible to turn enemies into bombs that suck up everything around them and then explode. The first Prototype was concerned greatly with turning players into powerful weapons of destruction as well. As Alex Mercer, players had the ability to thrash people in a number of very imaginative ways, and they got to shapeshift themselves like Clayface to do it. Sure, kung-fu is cool. Gun fights are fun. But turning your arm into a blade and disemboweling a guy who one second earlier thought you were his co-worker? That’s kind of a different level.

Batman: Arkham City

One of the big selling points of Batman: Arkham City when it was being marketed last year was its ability to throw tons of bad guys at Batman at once, giving him both the tools to beat the snot out of them and the ability to get pummeled by them en masse. The fighting was further deepened by making timing a lot more important to making sure Batman blasts people to within an inch of their lives, and giving Batman the ability to set and detonate explosive gel in between breaking noses. Awesome.

Breaking up the wailing on dudes portion of the game were the many sequences of flying, crashing into people while flying, solving mysteries and thrashing just about every Batman nemesis ever. That’s quite a bit of bad-assery. Also, you’re Batman, which pretty much tops out the bad-ass scale.

Sony is teasing a major announcement this week, but Amazon seems to have jumped the gun. Boxart, trailer and trail of clues within.

As noted by Neogaf users, the PlayStation Facebook page is hosting a teaser image.

“Will vengeance bring redemption?” it asks, above an April 19 date.

The image is stored on SCE America’s servers with the file name “ps_gow-teaser_12371_hp” so unless Gears of War has gone multiplatform (of course it hasn’t) it seemed pretty damn likely we were looking at the long-expected God of War IV.

Meanwhile, Amazon just went ahead and posted boxart and a trailer. The retailer gives the title God of War: Ascension, and the boxart shows Kratos and a background similar to that seen in the Sony teaser.

So: not the world’s best kept secret; earlier this week, a French site teased a major PlayStation 3 reveal. Expect official word tomorrow.

The Witcher 2′s ending was criticized for being too short and leaving too many loose ends, which isn’t quite as bad as the criticism leveled against the ending of Mass Effect 3, but nonetheless spurred the developers to respond by delivering free additional content in the Enhanced Edition that extended the outro.

In an interview with RPS, CD Projekt Red managing director Adam Badowski explained the reason for extending The Witcher 2′s ending and why they did not compromise their artistic integrity in doing so.

Badowski said:

“What we did doesn’t compromise our artistic integrity. We didn’t change the ending, but extended the outro. The story of The Witcher 2 is complete, and we didn’t change the writing. By extending the outro we mean adding new cinematics to it. We are really proud of what our story team did, so there was no point in changing that. What we added is a short cutscene and a series of final-boards. These short scenes will change depending on the player’s choices in the game. They show how your decisions influenced individual characters, locations and kingdoms. Our game was always about choice, and this is a neat way to show players how they really had control over the story.”

Meanwhile, level designer Ziemak Marek spoke to PC Gamer, explaining that the Enhanced Edition includes so much free content because they feel responsible for delivering a great experience to their fans and to build goodwill with the playerbase.

Marek said:

“It’s a part of our philosophy. Our concept is to create a really great RPG game, and if it’s not great for everyone and it’s not as great as we’d like it to be, if it has some glitches or there are some elements that could be better, then we feel responsible for remaking them.

[...]

“If you trust as a player that our games are great, you like them, you enjoy them, even if we can’t think about everything, if you find some glitches or problems in the game, you’ll be sure that will be fixed. Then you’ll probably feel good when you’re buying our games, and that’s what we’re after.”

Man, I love CD Projekt Red more and more every time they make the news.

(This is another edition of </RANT>, a weekly opinion piece column on GameFront. Check back every week for more. The opinions expressed are those of the author, and do not reflect those of GameFront.)

I have a lot of love for Valve. In fact, I’ve defended the company more often than not, since I enjoy its games, respect it as a company that does right by its fans, and admire how it generally manages to be a successful corporation without becoming the world’s biggest metaphorical prick. It’s a company with a rabid fanbase, and rabid fanbases often carry with them a high level of emotion and personal attachment, which can lead to a huge amount of conflict. Like BioWare, Valve’s fanbase can often be mistaken for a veritable hatedom, given the amount of vitriol and rage that occurs as a natural result of pure passion.

I have rarely agreed with the backlash. I couldn’t believe how angry people got when Left 4 Dead 2 was announced, and despite the appearance of highly optional (and pointless) downloadable content, I still fail to understand what made Portal 2 so horrible as to deserve a slew of 0/10 Metacritic user reviews. Nevertheless, the customer can be right just as much as it can be wrong, and if there’s one thing Valve’s furious funbase is correct about, it’s this:

Valve, you need to fucking announce Half-Life 3.

While I understand a company not wanting to announce something before it’s ready, and I totally respect Half-Life’s lengthy development cycle and commitment to getting everything done right, the customers are long overdue a bone tossed their way. Even if there’s barely enough gameplay in existence to justify an announcement trailer, some acknowledgement that the game is definitely in production needs to come, and it needed to happen ages ago. Fact of the matter is … I’m sick of hearing about it. So sick, in fact, that I fear the final confirmation will no longer excite me. I am worried I’ll just roll my eyes, mutter, “about damn time,” and expect to see nothing else for at least two years. That’s not the attitude I want to have about Half-Life, but right now, thinking about the series makes me want to fall asleep.

We recently “enjoyed” April Fools Day, and Valve was up to its usual trolling self with a cute little joke — a teaser site for Half-Life 3. Unfortunately, I didn’t actually find it cute. It wasn’t funny. The whole, “Valve won’t announce Half-Life 3″ gag is overplayed and trite now, and I don’t think Valve can get away with it anymore. It’s dipped into that particular honeypot one too many times, to the point where it can’t even get a trace taste by licking the glass. Every cautious nod toward the game, every subtle wink at the camera, I’m just tired of it. Many fans are as well, and I think that’s what’s annoying them more than anything. Valve’s been playing coy for years, and there comes a time when you have to either put up or shut up. Valve has arrived at that moment.

Half-Life 3, I feel, needs to be announced this year, and sooner rather than later. By now, the hype is so ridiculous that I worry not even the Half-Life series can pull enough tricks out of the bag to justify it. Hype can be a great thing, but it can also destroy even the most precious and sacred of franchises. Just look at what happened when Mass Effect 3 failed to deliver on its promises. Now imagine what’ll happen if Half-Life 3 is considered a let-down, after all this build. Gamers have rioted over a lot less. The equation of “Valve Fans + Huge Build + Years Of Trolling” leads me to think that Valve’s strategy is a powder keg in the making. I’m not looking forward to the fallout if something goes wrong.

Of course, I could be wrong, and Half-Life 3 might be everything the world dreamed of and more, managing to appeal to everybody who’s excited for it and escaping the wrath of the scorned audience. I’d hope so. But I think it would be better for everyone if we just dropped all this silly pretense and finally got the word from the horse’s mouth. No games, no teases, and no making us jump through hoops to “unlock” the news. Just tell us straight — is Half-Life 3 happening or not?

Valve is a master manipulator of its audience, and has successfully exploited the passion of its fans in a variety of ways over the years. You can only dance around a beehive for so long before getting stung, however, and in an era where gamers are more and more likely to rebel against their favorite games, Valve might be a bit too close to the nest this time around. At the very least, it needs to relieve the pressure and finally give the fans what they’ve asked for over the course of so many years. Next time it promises a big game announcement, it has to be Half-Life 3. If it’s Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3, I think it might be one misdirection too many and it could backfire stupendously. People were already bitter at the idea of new Portal and Left 4 Dead games getting precedence over Half-Life. If we see a threequel for either of those games before we get more Gordon Freeman? Well … it won’t be pretty. You know it won’t be.

One sentence can alleviate all that pressure. Just fucking do it, guys.

Guild 01 will have a demo of Time Travelers when it release, according to this week’s Famitsu. However, there is a condition to clear before accessing it, or rather several of them. What those are isn’t specified. The news come from a preview of the former, being made at Level 5. Level 5 is due to also release Travelers at some point this year for 3DS, Vita and PSP in Japan.

Thanks, Andriasang.

EA Launches Battlelog for iOS

by Salat on April 18, 2012 · 0 comments

Monkey see, monkey do. Not long ago, Activision released an iOS version of Call of Duty Elite, the statistics tracking app for Modern Warfare 3. Now, EA has released an iOS version of Battlelog, the statistics tracking app for Battlefield 3.

EA aims to hold user retention through social networking, and this move is one part of that plan. The free iOS Battlelog app allows Battlefield 3 players to keep track of their stats and unlocks and displays a “Battle Feed” which acts as a live feed of real-time notifications from friends in-game.

Blizzard has released the second in a series of Diablo 3 developer diaries. The first diary dated back to February 2011, at which point the developers believed they were going to release Diablo 3 by the end of 2011 — those dreamers.

This second diary was recorded April 5th, 2011 — three weeks before internal alpha testing. Jay Wilson, Christian Lichtner, and Jason Regier discuss the 53 pages of notes they received on the UI alone, as well as the very important business of getting seven to eight hours of sleep.

Check it out:

Money quote: “It’s a race against the clock. We’re trying to pack as much stuff into the game as possible.”
