It seems that games with punishing difficulty is becoming a thing of late. Last Year’s Dark Souls codified the trope with a game that has been described as being so hard to beat that it actually becomes boring. From Software has since kind of apologized about that, but it seems Pandora’s super difficulty box can’t be closed. Starbreeze’s upcoming reboot/relaunch/re-imagining of Syndicate might not look it, but it’s going to be really hard.

The reason has to do with the decision to reinvent the real time strategy classic as a first person shooter. In attempting to capture the flavor of an RTS game with a FPS, they have emphasized player cooperation and coordination as essential to survival, aspects Syndicate lead co-op programmer Lars Magnus Lang discussed at length with Eurogamer. “It’s hardcore in the aspect of if you try to play it as a shooter straight on it will be really hard,” Lang said. “You need to take a different approach from other shooters where you try to really cooperate and heal and revive each other, almost like an MMO experience. We have taken some inspiration from MMOs with the breach applications and the healing and reviving. It’s a mixture of those elements with the shooting experience.”

But does this mean you can’t play the game as a simple, straight-up shooter? Not necessarily. “You can still play it as a full on shooter,” Lang continued. “You can do the tank priest concept. But the best thing is when everyone grasps the concept of healing and reviving and everyone is doing it.” Wonderful, but there’s just one catch. Syndicate doesn’t have an easy setting.

What it has instead is a difficulty system, denoted by stars, ranging from normal, to insane. The game’s emphasis on co-op play means that if you’re playing alone, one star is likely to kick your ass. “One star, we don’t want to call it easy because it’s not easy, so instead we said, let’s start at normal. There’s no easy difficulty. Three stars is really tough. We can complete three stars in the office when QA play. But in two days there will be players that are better than I am at this game. That’s for them, the ones who want that really tough experience.”

Yikes. Sounds daunting, particularly after watching the GameFront crew playing the demo in a video we posted yesterday. And Starbreeze knows it. “We’re in constant fear we made it too hard.” Well, you know what they say: to ask the question is to know the answer. If the developers think it might be too hard, expect amazing difficulty to ensue. Better make sure you have a party organized when this thing drops on February 24th.

The long awaited return of Twisted Metal. It has loomed over us like so many dead pedestrians in a 300 car pile up on an overpass in South LA. After a bout of he said / she said earlier this year over the possibility of executive deputy prez Kazuo Hirai becoming president and CEO of Sony Corp., Sony has decided to make the news official this morning. As of April 1, 2012, Kaz will step up to the job of current CEO Sir Howard Stringer, effectively kicking off two months of vacation for Stringer before he becomes chairman of the board of directors in June 2012.

“I look forward to helping Kaz in every way I can so that succession leads inevitably to success,” Stringer said in the announcement press release. Kaz was ready with the back patting as well, as he said, “Challenging as times are for Sony now, were it not for the strong leadership of Sir Howard Stringer these past seven years, we would have been in a much more difficult position.” Hirai is known for having lead Sony Computer Entertainment through its most successful years, as well as being the guy who says “Riiiiiiiidge Racer!” really enthusiastically.

Stringer’s appointment to the board of directors in June awaits final approval during the annual shareholders meeting in June. If confirmed, he will replace retiring chairman Yotaro Kobayashi, though he will in no way match Kobayashi’s totally sweet name.

Face it, everybody: Of all The Beatles, the one with the most impressive musical talent was Paul McCartney. Yeah, I said it. The man wrote more incredibly complex and extremely memorably tunes in 8 short years than an army of songsmiths could write in a single lifetime. His only crime is that he kind of sucked at writing about politics and spirituality, two things people cared a lot about in the 60s. Also, he long ago kind of turned into the cheesy goofball his detractors always said he was.

Even so, one hopes he might pull it out and actually write interesting music again. Maybe the thing he needs is to be taken out of creative comfort zone, kind of like when he recorded an album with Nigel Godrich and it didn’t suck. Perhaps writing for a video game? Lo and behold, it’s happening! In an interview with the German-language publication Zeit (‘Time’, auf Deutsch), he was asked if he’d ever consider writing for a game and revealed that he already is.

McCartney said it was an exciting opportunity for him, and a chance to reach a new audience. While confirming that he’s never actually played video games, he gets how big they are, noting that video games outsell records these days. Way to be modern, gramps! Now the only question is, what’s the game? Some clues:

* He’s obviously been given permission to speak about it, so either the developer is not keeping it under wraps, or they’re hoping to build early buzz.
* Macca’s statements in the interview indicate that he’s still in the compositional stages. However, writing music for a kind of like scoring a film, so he’s almost certainly looking at footage from something that is at least alpha.
* It’s probably not a music based game. This sounds like a real soundtrack.
* We can also rule out any small publisher, since Sir Paul didn’t become almost a billionaire by working for scale.
* We can probably rule out anything like Grand Theft Auto, given his politics.

I can’t speculate on the studio – this list of the world’s most successful developers might be a good place to start – but I wouldn’t be shocked if this is a late 2012 or early 2013 release. I suppose we’ll have an official announcement soon, and you’ll be updated as soon as we know. Let us know in comments if you have any ideas.
