If you’re not living under a rock or in a cave in the wilds of Pakistan, then you’ve heard that Watchmen opened on Friday. Find out why only idiots would miss it.

Watchmen opens with a brilliant visual montage set to Bob Dylan’s Times They Are A Changing that sets the stage in an alternate 1985 in which the superheroes who walk among us have been outlawed, and tricky Dick Nixon is elected to a 4th term after America wins the Vietnam war. Now – if you think that one sentence was too complex for your simpleton’s brain to grasp, you’re going to want to skip the Watchmen. This isn’t a film that you should sit through and half-pay attention to while you’re texting. Unlike just about every other movie based on a “comic” (and we’ll use the term loosely here), the Watchmen demands your full attention. It’s not just a visual feast – it’s also the most darkly intense film I’ve seen in a very long time, and it’s not for the kiddies.

The mood of the film is dark as we follow Rorschach, the only active costumed hero, as he tries to solve the murder of another masked hero – the Comedian – who is tossed through the window of his high-rise apartment after a brutal fight with an unknown assailant. As the story unfolds, you meet other former masks – now retired from crime fighting – many of whom are living lives both anonymous and bland. The characters are complex, and appear completely realized. Rather than flat, comic book heroes, we find Watchmen populated with exceptional people that have histories, who have made mistakes, and who have regrets and their own self-interests in mind.

Visually, Watchmen is a stunning piece of filmmaking. There is beauty – a rough, gritty, broken-tooth sort of beauty in nearly every frame set in New York. The digital effects aren’t overpowering and add a layer of otherworldliness to the character of Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) – who is something that is no longer human and someone whose is losing touch with ties to the rest of us and our mundane existence

One of the things that separates Watchmen from other films based on graphic novels, is this one is based on what is arguably the best of the best in the genre. Fans of the novel will be satisfied – although die-hard fanboys will spot the places where the film veers off the course set by the original novel. As a film, Watchmen stands far and away above nearly every other “comic book” adaptation. Even so – you can’t really compare Watchmen to most other films, other than to say that it deals with some of the same themes that other films touch on: life vs. death, good vs. evil, etc., but Watchmen does this in a way that would never work in another “comic” film. Here, there are no solid lines between heros and villains, because the heros don’t just have a requisite “fatal flaw” – they have very real flaws that everyone has.

Of course, not everyone likes complexity. Idiots, for example, tend to like their fiction in a nice, neat package where you can spot the good guys and the bad guys using the color of their hats. If you fit in that category, go re-rent a copy of Electra or Daredevil. If you’re smart, please do yourself a favor and go see the Watchmen on the biggest screen you can. You’ll thank me later.

Space, the final frontier. You’ve heard that before, and you’ve seen countless Star Trek shows and movies come and go. This May, however, the franchise gets a fresh new start. How excited are you?

I can tell you, we’re pretty excited. We’ve grown up with Star Trek – it’s like part of the family. With J.J. Abrams at the helm, the new Star Trek film may well be the blockbuster that all of its predecessors aspired to, but never quite attained. The production values from the trailer look slick and – dare I say – futuristic. The action also appears to be there, with enough conflict, tension, and explosive space combat to make any Trek fanboy spill his Romulan Ale.

If you have been watching Sci-Fi’s Battlestar Galactica (and you should) then you know there’s something weird about Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. In the next episode, will Starbuck’s secret finally be revealed?

Spoiler Alert – please don’t read further if you do not want to know Starbuck’s story.

Starbuck has a secret. You see, she died back in Season 3 (see Maelstrom episode) while chasing a phantom Cylon raider into the “great spot” of a gas giant. Lee Adama chased in his own Viper, and saw Starbuck’s apparently explode in the dense atmosphere.

Then she was mourned, and that little rag-tag group of humans did what they could to get over Starbuck’s death. That was until Starbuck magically returned in the Season 3 final cliffhanger, saying she has been to Earth and would lead the fleet there.

OK that was strange.

Then, during Season 4, there was some – shall we say – skepticism about Starbuck’s miraculous return. After all, the folks on the good ship Galactica have seen people return from the dead before, but those people always turned out to be Cylon. But Kara Thrace is different – she returned in a shiny new Viper. She can’t be a Cylon, right? She can’t explain why she knows what she knows, but Starbuck is pretty certain she’s no fracking skin-job.

Next, as the most of the “final five” Cylons are revealed, we find that the key to finding Earth is linked to her new Viper, still sitting in the launch bay. Indeed, the fleet finds it’s way to Earth – the fabled home of the thirteenth tribe of Cobal.

Everyone’s hopes are dashed as Earth turns out to be a ghost planet destroyed by nuclear catastrophe millennia ago. Devestated, but determined, Starbuck sets off with the Cylon Leoben to find the source of the beacon that led them to Earth in the first place. And they succeed.

So, now the question is exactly who, or what, is Kara Thrace? Is she a Cylon, a ghost, a demon? Cylon doesn’t seem likely since there are 12 models, and all of them have been revealed. Or have they? In the No Exit episode, the last of the Final Five Cylons argues with Cavil about a lot of things, but also mentions how the Five worked with the Cylons to create eight human models. Now I’m know math whiz, but as far as I know, 5 + 8 doesn’t equal twelve.

In the trailer for the next episode, we’re teased about finding out the truth about Starbuck. Since this isn’t Star Trek, we can probably rule out parallel realities or disturbances in the space-time continuum. Nope – if Sci-Fi is going to reveal Starbuck’s truth, they have only four episodes left to do it in – and they have to stick to the rules.

And that’s why I think she’s a Cylon.
