When I watch zombie flicks I am usually struck by how damn stupid the humans tend to be. Running about not properly boarding up a building to make a proper last stand. If no humans fall to the infection there can’t be more zombies so it is just a matter of time, and using your [...]

Apparently, people still really quite like Portal 2, and really like modding it. That, at least, is the conclusion drawn from the numbers released by Valve about the Perpetual Testing Initiative, the update that made additional, and very simple modding tools available to PC and MAC Portal 2 players on May 8th. In just 4 days since launch, the update has resulted in the creation of 35,000 user-created maps, which were shared in over 1.3 million downloads.

Hi fives must surely be making the rounds of Valves, and to commemorate them, Valve is offering some pretty deep discounts on premium games on Steam. Portal 2 is now 66% off, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim got a 33% haircut, and several Team Fortress 2 Workshop Items are discounted at 50%. Hooray!

Here’s the press release:

PORTAL 2 PERPUTUAL TESTING INITIATIVE: OVER 1.3 MIL TESTS

Steam Workshop Sale On Now In Celebration

May 10, 2012 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the early findings of the Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative.

Released just days ago, The “Perpetual Testing Initiative” has already resulted in the creation and publishing of over 35,000 user-created maps, collectively consumed via more than 1.3 million downloads.

To celebrate the launch, Steam is holding a Weekend Workshop Sale offering Portal 2 for 66% off, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for 33% off, and many of this year’s Team Fortress 2 Workshop Items available for 50% off their regular price.

The Perpetual Testing Initiative allows players to easily create, share, and play Portal 2 puzzles. The Initiative comes with a simplified Puzzle Maker that allows that creation of mind-bending puzzles without ever leaving the game.

The Puzzle Maker directly publishes maps to the Steam Workshop where users may browse, vote on, and select to play them. Selected puzzles are automatically downloaded and installed inside Portal 2.

Al Lowe is determined to make things right with fans of Leisure Suit Larry after years of less-than-stellar sequels have sullied the poor little fella’s name.

Speaking with freelancer Dave Oshry on Joystiq, Lowe said when Vivendi announced in 2003 it was working on Magna Cum Laude starring Larry’s nephew, Larry Lovage, he initially wanted to be included.

However, it wasn’t until development on the game was winding down that Vivendi contacted him, admitted the game was rather awful, and that his help was needed.

“Towards the end they came to me and said, ‘This game needs help.’ I said, ‘Well, maybe, what are we talking about?’ Well first you’ve got to sign a non-disclosure agreement, then you have to sign a contract that says you will only say good things about the game, and for that we’ll give you some money’”, Lowe recalled.

“And I said, ‘Wait a minute, I haven’t even seen the game yet and you want me to say that I’ll never say anything bad about it? How bad is it? ‘Pretty bad.’”

Lowe declined to participate in the game at this point, and realized he made the right decision after purchasing and playing the game himself.

“It was like seeing a video from your son’s kidnappers,” he said. “On one hand he’s still alive but it’s like, ‘Oh God, what are they doing to him!’ And it just pained me to watch it happen. You know I put ten years of my life into that guy and he was very good to me.”

Codemasters acquired the franchise from Activision-Blizzard after the Vivendi merger and closure of Sierra, and released Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust which was developed by Team 17.

Lowe was never contacted regarding the project, and like Magna Cum Laude before it, Box Office Bust received poor ratings and tanked.

Because of all the negative press and terrible sequels, Lowe said it was impossible for him and publisher Replay Games to secure funding for the high-def remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry.

However, thanks to the popularity of Kickstarter, Lowe and his team decided to give crowd funding a whirl. The firm set a funding goal of $ 500,000 and eventually surpassed it, which will allow the developers to add new content to Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards Reloaded, which is set for launch sometime in 2013.

Lowe said there are some gamers who may not purchase the title due to how abysmal the last two outing were, but he and his team are determined to convince them otherwise.

“To a certain extent those two games have poisoned the well,” he said. “There’s a lot of people who know those games and don’t know the old games who are gonna go, ‘Yeah those games sucked! I’m not gonna support this new project!’ … and that’s sad.

“On the other hand, I think we’re going to be able to convince people that, ‘Yeah, try this, you’ll laugh your ass off. Yeah it’s sexy, but it’s funny too.’”

“I think there’s finally hope at the end of this long brutal violent horizon that we’ll all laugh again soon.”

The entire interview with Lowe is through the link, and it’s a banging good read, and gives you a bit of insider knowledge of Sierra’s downfall due board member Walter Forbes’ criminal activities.

Rockstar really wants you to join the Official Rockstar Group on steam, preferably before the launch of Max Payne 3. So they’re offering a little incentive for reticent gamers: Join the Official Rockstar Steam group, and you’ll get a copy of Midnight Club 2 absolutely free.

There are a couple of catches. You can’t just join up – you’re going to have to pony up some cash. The offer is only available once you’ve actually made at least one successful purchase through the group. And if you already own Midnight Club 2, too bad. The special only applies to Midnight Club 2. No substitute games are being offerred. The offer expires 10 AM Pacific time on May 15th.

Roughly two and a half weeks ago, at the behest of the Joystiq Qrew and my family, I ceased all consumption of soda-pop and fast-food. The change has been dramatic, to say the least, and while I feel less “full of goo” than I once did, I fear that I also may be changing into someone, or something, that I’m not comfortable with.

Earlier this week, for instance, I purchased blueberry-flavored Pop Tarts while grocery shopping, when I just as easily could have bought S’mores flavored. There wasn’t even anyone else with me, it was a decision I made of my own volition and what’s worse, I didn’t even realize it until much, much later. This is just one example of the many, increasingly frequent health-conscious decisions I’ve made as of late.

So, I just wanted to tell you guys that I love you, while I still can. I don’t know what is to become of me, but I want you to take these webcomics from last week, read them, vote for your favorites after the break, and enjoy. The old me would have wanted it that way.

Revenge of the Aparoids (Brawl in the Family)
The Warrior Spirit (Penny Arcade)
Hidden Power (Nerf Now!!)
Hands-On Experience (Awkward Zombie)
Canine Conundrum (Life in Aggro)
