Rock of the Dead is unapologetically The Typing of the Dead meets Rock Band. As Bryan Jury, CCO of developer Epicenter Studios and producer on the game, put it, “People already own the plastic. We’re just giving them a different type of game to play with it.” And an on-rails shooter where one uses the guitar or drum peripheral already in close proximity to their entertainment center is certainly different.

Gameplay is what you’d expect from some cracked out House of the Dead mod: creatures of death come toward the screen constantly as the camera moves on rails and it’s your job to fret (or drum) the undead to un-undeath. Epicenter believes that the title is compatible with most major guitar and drum peripherals. It’s also in the process of testing beyond the Guitar Hero and Rock Band peripherals that many already own.

Preview: Dead Rising 2 (single player)

by Salat on June 15, 2010 · 1 comment

Even though things have changed for Capcom’s sequel, Dead Rising 2 — new developer in Blue Castle Games, new protagonist in Chuck Greene and a new venue that swaps out the tried-and-true mall setting for the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas — it felt very familiar. From the largely unchanged controls to the helpful security guard passing you updates on your walkie talkie (thankfully, this time around the text is actually legible) on to the survivor escort system, Dead Rising 2 is a sequel in the most literal sense.

Dead Space 2 In Action

by Salat on June 14, 2010 · 1 comment

Dead Space was a surprise horror hit for Electronic Arts, and EA used its E3 press conference to show gamers a scene from the terrifying sequel.

The gameplay demo began with Isaac standing in the Church of Unitology (the structure, though it is also a larger organization), which looks like a cross between a chapel and an alien hive. Sure enough, after just a few moments, Isaac is assaulted by a swarm of necromorphs the size of children.
Part of Visceral Games' goal with Dead space 2 is to make Isaac feel less vulnerable. His newfound power is on display as he fights against the swarm, shooting electrified javelins and executing brutal melee attacks against the little buggers.

We also saw more of Isaac's special abilities in action, including stasis, which allows him to slow down enemies to strategically dismember them. Telekinesis also looks more useful this time around, with more weapon-like objects laying around and waiting to be thrown at monsters.
The demo concluded with Isaac crawling into an elevator, which immediately turns into an airlock as one of the glass panes shatters. Pieces of the floor are torn off and sucked into space as Isaac hangs on for his life. He escapes by jumping down a hatch, but before we can see how the situation resolves, Dead Space 2 producer Steve Papoustis told the audience that we'd have to wait until Sony's press conference tomorrow to see more.

You, however, don't have to wait. This section of the game is similar to what we saw for our cover story, and you can find out what we know so far about Dead Space 2 at the game's hub right here.

Left 4 Dead 2 Reviews

by Salat on June 14, 2010 · 6 comments

Left 4 Dead 2

  • On day one, Left 4 Dead 2 features more co-operative campaigns, more campaigns and maps for the versus game modes than the original Left 4 Dead did, plus support for Survival Mode right out of the box.
  • Left 4 Dead 2 features quality next generation co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
  • Updated “AI Director 2.0″ technology expands players’ ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day, creating fresh gameplay every time.
  • Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies.
  • The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog.

Left 4 Dead 2 is set at roughly the same time as the original – just after the outbreak that turned most of the population into various zombie mutants. Players assume the role of 4 new “Survivors,” each with their own personality and new dialog. The game leads these “Survivors” through the southeastern region of the US – from Savannah, Georgia thru the bayou country, and climaxing in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Left 4 Dead 2 is the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaime

Been waiting to see Dead Space 2 in action ever since our cover story several months ago? Take a look at this new gameplay trailer, featuring Isaac demonstrating his status ability and dismembering various necromorphs. There isn't anything earth-shattering in the trailer, but it still looks fun as hell.
