Edition

We have to imagine that the amazing story of the Chilean miners being rescued after languishing underground for 69 days enraptured the Japanese console buying public’s attention so much over this past week that, well, they plum stopped buying systems. Aside from a slight uptick in Nintendo DS Lite and PlayStation 2 sales — outliers, to be clear — hardware sales across the entire spectrum were down.

Unsurprisingly, the PSP remainded in the top position, riding high on the recently released Monster Hunter Portable 3rd demo. In the coming weeks, however, expect to see that little PSP’s numbers triple or more — perhaps you haven’t heard, but Monster Hunter is serious business in Japan. Perhaps not as serious as being trapped underground for nearly three months, but, ya know, pretty serious.

Is Bubble Bobble still Bubble Bobble without its adorable dinosaur mascots? Square Enix is having Bubblun and Bobblun sit out for the latest Puzzle Bobble (Bust a Move) in favor of someone named “Mickey Mouse.” Puzzle Bobble: Disney Edition for Japanese mobile phones combines the familiar bubble-shooting, color-matching game with cutesy Disney characters.

Mickey is joined by Minnie, Donald, Winnie the Pooh, Stitch, and Marie from the Aristocats. We must admit that the renditions of those characters are pretty cute. The more we look at that Pooh bear, the less we mind the exclusion of the dinosaur mascots. Of course, whether or not we like the look is totally meaningless, since this is only being released on Japanese cell phones.

Blog Herding: Community Edition 10/14/10

by Salat on October 14, 2010 · 0 comments

Blog Herding in the heezy! Check out the fine scribblings of your peers below! Happy reading, friends!

In-Game Advertising: Hate It? Or Really Hate It?
In recent titles, it's not unusual to come across a Coca-Cola can, Energizer battery, or even Capri Sun pouches. Advertisements are everywhere including in our favorite games. What do you think about in-game advertising? Hist's blog headline makes his stance pretty clear. Share your thoughts on the matter in the comments section of his post.

Superhero Games And My Disappointment

TOGNick wants greater control over powers than is currently offered in today's games. "My disappointment doesn't come from some of the more recent licensed games, such as Arkham Asylum or even Ultimate Alliance, but rather from the open world games. While a lack of freedom isn't missing in some of these games like Infamous and Crackdown, there hasn't been much creativity for the user." Do you concur? Read the post and hit up the comments section.

Is Being A "Gamer" Harmful?

Gamers get a bad rep and usually fall under the stereotype of being an antisocial, overweight male who lives in his momma's basement. It's pretty safe to say that's not true. Cody Gilley explores this and other stigmas associated with being a gamer.

An End To Labels?

It appears developers are working to bridge the gap between casual and hardcore by trying to create an experience accessible to everyone. Can you really please everyone? Check out Shootist2600's blog to find out.

Editor blogs you may have missed:
Reiner reflects on the meaning of Achievements. Andy Mac also does a bit of reflecting on the one year anniversary of our redesign and posts his Letter from the Editor for all of you fine people to read.

Have you produced or read a blog post on gameinformer.com that you think should be considered for upcoming installments of Blog Herding? Send over an e-mail with a link to annette@gameinformer.com. I also accept bribes.

Dead Space 2 Collectors Edition Announced

by Salat on October 14, 2010 · 0 comments

Are you a collector in addition to being a gamer? If so, you'll want to pick up this Collectors Edition of Dead Space 2, complete with a replica plasma cutter and other goodies.

This special version of the upcoming survival horror sequel will include:
Dead Space 2
Replica of Isaac's plasma cutter
Downloadable Unitology Suit and Force Gun
Dead Space 2 Original Soundtrack
Concept Art Lithograph
Dead Space Extraction with Move compatibility (PS3 version only)

That's a lot of stuff. I don't normally go in for collectors editions, but this package looks like it has something for every Dead Space fan. The game hits on January 25, so you still have some time to decide which version you're going to pick up.

According to a (since removed) image found on Amazon and now posted on Examiner, the collector’s edition of Dead Space 2 will include a life-size toy Plasma Cutter, in addition to a soundtrack CD, a DLC voucher, and a piece of artwork. EA announced its intention to produce a collector’s edition for the sequel way back in January, when it sought ideas for pack-in items from fans. The plasma cutter happened to be on the list even then — and we called it “outrageous.”

Being a sort-of leaked item, EA hasn’t officially announced its existence, and thus no information about its price is known.

[Thanks, DarkKainDrg]
