grid

Codemasters’ SVP of production Jame MacDonald has told Develop that new iterations of Race Driver: Grid and Operation Flashpoint are in development.

The games are currently in development at the company’s Southam studio alongside DiRT 3.

“We’ve got a major launch with F1 coming up in September and developed at our Birmingham studio,” said MacDonald, “and we hope to draw new IP from there. Our Guildford studio is working hard on Bodycount, and we will be looking to to take that franchise further and further with the addition of more IP.

“In Southam it’s full steam ahead with the next iteration in our Flashpoint series, as well as the next Dirt and Grid. It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out.”

The original Race Driver: Grid launched in 2008 for PS3, 360, PC and DS, while the last Operation Flashpoint, Dragon Rising, released last year for PS3, 360 and PC.

At E3 2009, we played Nintendo’s Line Attack Heroes, a bizarre action game, designed by Secret of Mana creator Koichi Ishii. In the game, players build a line of allies, which is used to attack enemies. While fun, the simple gameplay and single-screen level design seemed like an experience better fit for WiiWare instead of the proposed disc release.

Surprise! The game has been turned into a WiiWare title, due out next Tuesday (in Japan) for just 1,000 Wii Points. The odd fighter still features cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, including Battle Royale, Flag Battle and Tag Match. All of these multiplayer game types are demonstrated in video on Nintendo of Japan’s site; though with four small armies running around the tiny rectangular arenas, it’s pretty incomprehensible.

Given its appearance as a retail title at E3 last year, Line Attack Heroes would seem to be a title Nintendo is interested in localizing. It’ll be even easier to do so now that it’s been transitioned to WiiWare.

Looking for a relaxing end to a slow summer day?

Rockstar Games recently released a video of Jose Gonzalez performing “Far Away” from Red Dead Redemption.

Written exclusively for the game, Rockstar had Gonzalez record a bare bones video of the song on the roof of their New York office. The result is a video that matches the bleak and barren tone of the song, and the setting which it was written for.

Gonzalez certainly has some talent, and it’s nice to see him get some spotlight for the excellent work he did for Red Dead Redemption.

If you're like many people who have been anxiously awaiting upcoming top-down racer Reckless Racing (formerly Deliverace), then today brought about some good news. We previewed the game way back in the beginning of March, but the weeks just kept on passing by with no game release in sight. When developer Pixelbite suddenly went silent in the Reckless Racing discussion thread in our forums, we knew that something had to be up. Thankfully, what we've learned is that Reckless Racing has been picked up by EA Mobile and is still very much on it's way to the iPhone and iPad.

Here's a screen from the iPad version and information given to us in the press release for Reckless Racing:

Roaring engines, squealing tires and amazing graphics. Reckless Racing mixes old-school top-down racing game play with state of the art graphics and engaging multiplayer features. Perfectly balanced controls let players skid, slip and slide through the most beautiful tracks ever seen on a handheld device – leaving nothing but mud-splattered opponents and skid marks behind. Reckless Racing features a fully stocked internet multiplayer mode, on-line leaderboards and the ability to trade ghost races with other players from all over the world.

EA pegs the game's release date as Summer 2010, so by our best estimation if it's not out by the end of this month, then it should be coming sometime in August. After so many months of waiting, we're just as anxious as everybody else to get our hands on the final version of the game. We'll report on any new information we get for Reckless Racing, such as a release date, as well as outline the upcoming lineup of other games from EA Mobile being released this year.
