BioWare and EA have made much of The Old Republic’s credentials as a “story-based” MMO, so when EA Games head honcho Frank Gibeau tells GamesIndustry.biz that the game “has 200 hours of gameplay for each of the six classes,” it’s hard not to be impressed. 200 hours of BioWare-quality narrative is alright by me.

There’s only one problem: The Old Republic has eight classes, not six. An insignificant misstatement, maybe, but an amusing one in light of the fact that EA has called their huge MMO investment the “most expensive game ever.” One would think that if you were the head of a label busy creating such a fabulously expensive property, you might bother to learn a little bit more about it.

There are some things that Gibeau does know about, which also contribute to the game’s size and cost: “The crafting, the raids, the multiplayer.” Strange that no one wants to talk about the Rogue Squadron-style space combat introduced last year at GamesCom. Still, the exec reminds us, “it’s vast. It’s a gigantic game.”

On that score, he’s clearly correct. The game will either be a gigantic success, or a gigantic failure. Not sure there’s much of a middle ground available. Check out our hands-on Old Republic preview from E3 to decide for yourself.
