Why do games fail? You could blame it on the publishers who don’t give their studios enough time or money for the project. You could blame it on the developers who either bite off more than they can chew or practice poor management. You could even blame it on the license holders who have unrealistic demands and don’t understand how the industry really works. Whatever the case, sometime games just fail. But we have a theory for turning these disasters into successes. And that theory is monkeys. Need we say more?

Whether we’re talking about critical darlings that just don’t sell, or games that get laughed off the store shelves, there is one thing that could help any game sell better: monkeys. Let’s look at a few facts.

Fact one: Monkey’s are funny and everyone loves them. It’s pretty hard to dispute this, so we’ll move on.

Fact two: Super Monkey Ball makes Sega truckloads of money. We can’t confirm this with any actually number, but Sega keeps making these games so its monkeys must be popular.

Fact three: Secret of Monkey Island. This game was so popular it got remade for Xbox Live, twice. It wasn’t even about monkeys; it became popular just because the word monkey was in the title.

Three seconds of brainstorming haven’t turned up any other games with monkeys in them, so we’ll move on.

Wait, what about Donkey Kong?

Oh well, we’ve already moved on.

Do we even need more facts? Science doesn’t look at all the evidence before it make a hypothesis, so why should we? Let’s move on and see how this theory could be put into practice.

Every month the Experimental Gameplay Project has a new challenge for indie game developers: to make a game in under seven days that fits the month’s theme. August’s them was “0 BUTTONS.” The results are in, and 40 new buttonless games are now freely available at the site. Some of the games are playable in your browser, while others are free to download (all really quick downloads of course). Of those, many are PC only, but some are PC/Mac/Linux or even PC/Mac/browser-based.

Without buttons many of the games are all about quickly maneuvering or dodging with the mouse, while others use the mouse to collect or kill everything on the screen. They’ve got a little of everything this month, with mouse-controlled zombie apocalypse survival games to platformers, shmups, and even a game where you try to point a camera at a UFO for as long as you can while driving your car.

Hop over to the EGP to check ‘em out. Even if you don’t find a new favorite game here, it’s always interesting to see what people can do with awkward restrictions like an inability to use buttons, as well as a seven day time limit. Their new challenge for this month is “NEVERENDING” games, and they’ll have a new batch of those available at the end of the month.

When Super Giant Games opened its doors during GDC earlier this year, it revealed it was working on a digital title to be released in 2011. This week, Giant Bomb unveiled that title — it’s called Bastion and should be available for public consumption by next summer.

Supergiant explains Bastion as an “action role-playing game set in a lush imaginative world, in which players must create and fight for civilization’s last refuge as a mysterious narrator marks their every move.” The “mysterious,” somewhat lyrical narrator makes his first appearance in the game’s trailer — which we’ve dropped after the break. Considering Supergiant’s pedigree (ex-EALA Command & Conquer devs) and how beautifully detailed this initial media is, we have high hopes for Bastion.

The game will be playable at PAX Prime this weekend as part of the “PAX 10.”

Thankfully, there are enough similarly minded folks out there, prompting the service to single out WiFi support as a “top development priority” to be introduced in beta form before October.

OnLive also announced today that it is extending its Founding Members program yet again (it was due to end this coming weekend), offering a free year of service and a guaranteed .95 monthly fee thereafter to anyone who signs up before January 1, 2011.

For those who are already members, Labor Day weekend (that’s September 4-6 — only two days away!) will bring with it a sale on all titles in OnLive’s catalog, to the tune of 50 percent off each and every one. A full list of games available can be found here. If you’re keen to try out the service (or get a preview of its WiFi support) the company will be exhibiting at PAX Prime this weekend, September 3-5.
