News: Korean studio uses Kinect in PC game

by Salat on December 28, 2010 · 0 comments

Korean developer GamePix is to utilise the Kinect sensor in a new PC title – a massively multiplayer online game created for the local market, but made to “resemble console games”.

Speaking to website IncGamers, GamePix’s Jason Lim indicated that, “Currently in MS, there are many game companies that are trying to apply for this system.”

New game Divine Soul will apparently feature combat similar to one-on-one beat ‘em-up Tekken, although it’s unclear if that aspect of the game will also use Kinect. “The game’s support of gaming pads make it resemble console games even more, and is scheduled to support Kinect,” said Lim.

Divine Souls MMO will use Kinect on PC

by Salat on December 22, 2010 · 0 comments

You may not have heard of Korean dev studio GamePrix, but its latest game, an MMO on the PC called Divine Souls, will support Kinect somewhere down the line. Company rep Jason Lim also told IncGamers that it’s not the only developer who’s trying to work with Microsoft on Kinect support in PC games.

There’s currently no timetable for when the functionality will be live in the game, though Lim says “soon.” In the meanwhile, why not check out some of the other crazy stuff Kinect is doing on the PC.

Sure, Kinect has been tested in plenty of super scientific ways over the past few months, and given plenty of secondary uses through impressive hacks, but will it work if you’re … Gwar? Game Informer had bassist Beefcake the Mighty and lead singer Oderus Urungus stop by its offices to capture on video a monumental 10-minute Dance Central session. If you haven’t already clicked through excitedly, we should warn you the clip is a bit on the NSFW side of things, so viewer beware.

Also, enjoy.

What if Kinect could track individual fingers? What if it could see not only the position of your hand, but its rotation as well? According to a report by Eurogamer, more advanced tracking from the Kinect is possible — but only through a firmware update which its sources say is coming.

The Kinect sensor would be able to transfer up to 35MB/s of data, but is currently locked to about 15MB/s. The artificial limit is imposed by the fact that multiple USB devices may be connected to the console. However, Microsoft engineers are supposedly working on a fix that will allow a greater amount of data to be transferred from the Kinect, upgrading the 320×240 image it currently uses to a 640×480 one — an effective fourfold increase in pixels.

Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter’s said that a firmware-based solution is “doable,” but admitted that there will be additional caveats for Microsoft to address. “It is uncertain just how accurate the camera’s sensor is,” even when operating at a higher resolution. “Additionally, processing four times as many depth pixels could slow things down more.”

infinityblade

Playthroughs numbering well into the double-digits. Every weapon, ring, and piece of armor mastered. So many duels with the God King that we’ve started attempting to translate his weird gibberish language for fun.

We need more of this game. Like, now.

Thankfully, Infinity Blade’s first update is dropping next week. Better still, it’s free – as all future Infinity Blade updates will be.

Next week’s “booster pack” will raise the game’s level cap to 45 by adding five new weapons, five helmets, five shields, and one armor set. Also, you’ll have the opportunity to tussle with something called the “Marrow Fiend,” which is one of those things that we fear based solely on the amount of pain its name implies it could inflict on us.

As for what’ll be in future updates, Chair’s not quite ready to discuss specifics. However, Chair’s Donald Mustard gave Joystiq an outline of what we can expect from the highly addictive hack ‘n’ slash.

“There will be new areas to go to, the story will be evolving a little more as you see what the God King is really up to, and we’re going to let people go down into the dungeons. For high-level players especially, you’ll start to find some enemies that make the [current] enemies look like nothing,” he said.

Kinecting the dots

Interestingly, Mustard also admitted that Infinity Blade began life as a game for Microsoft’s living room-devouring Motion Lord, Kinect.

“If we were going to make a Kinect title, what would we make? What would a Chair Kinect game look like? That discussion happened, you know, a year and a half ago,” he explained.

“We had this really cool design, and it’s not that dissimilar from the game you’re playing today; it’s just been refined and adapted to the iOS screen, which honestly I think is where the design works the best.”

Already frantically searching for your receipt to return that Christmas Kinect and pick up an iThing instead? Slow down. All hope for an Xbox 360 version of Infinity Blade certainly isn’t lost.

“Yeah,” said co-founder Geremy Mustard, “if the Kinect really takes off over the holiday season, who knows?”

We have no problem with this. The more Infinity Blade, the better, we say. The hunched backs and long, gray beards we’ve cultivated while spending way too much time with the game agree wholeheartedly.
