Shine, the News Corp owned production company, has acquired social gaming team Bossa Studios.
“Shine has shown a great support for Bossa Studio’s creative-led mission and together, in addition to launching entirely new concepts,” said Henrique Olifiers, Bossa Studios co-founder.
“We hope to offer hundreds of millions of TV viewers and social gamers the opportunity to experience some their most-loved programmes in an entirely fresh, immersive way.”

An updated clause in Sony’s terms and conditions for its PSN service, which has caused uproar amongst gamers because it appears to ask users to forgo their rights to participate in class action lawsuits against Sony in perpetuity, is largely designed to protect against suits in the US, says Sheridans partner and specialist interactive entertainment lawyer Alex Chapman.
The updated contract features an entirely new paragraph 15, which advises that acquiescence to the contract means that:
“If you have a Dispute with any Sony Entity or any of a Sony Entity’s officers, directors, employees and agents that cannot be resolved through negotiation within the time frame described in the ‘Notice of Dispute’ clause below.

Valve Software has made its popular physics puzzler Portal free until September 20, hoping to see it used in classrooms.
“When we heard the buzz surrounding the new role video games are playing in education, we had to throw our hat in the ring,” said the developer.
“Innovative educators are finding ways to incorporate Portal and Portal 2 into their classrooms-helping teach physics and critical-thinking skills. It’s eye-opening to see how video games can be used in amazing and unexpected ways to help educate our next generation.”

Digi-Capital and Octopus Investments have been added to the line-up of next week’s Games Invest 2011, taking place at the Eurogamer Expo on September 22.
Games investment bank Digi-Capital focuses on Europe, North America and Asia, and also publishes the 2011 Global Video Games Investment Review. Octopus Investments currently has £2.5 billion in assets under management and invests in the UK media industry.
Games Invest 2011, in conjunction with GamesIndustry.biz, offers small to medium-sized games and technology companies an opportunity to network and pitch to investors, publishers and other financiers, as well as take part in a morning of discussions and sessions looking at financing opportunities in the games business.

Mobile developer and publisher ngmoco is rumoured to have acquired NBA Legend developer, Lionside.
According to Inside Social Gaming, vice president of business operations Michael McBride and European account manager Kane Curran both updated their Linked In profiles to indicate that Lionside was “acquired by ngmoco.”
Brandon Barber, Lionside’s CEO, also updated his Google+ profile to read, “Lionside & ngmoco marketing and product guy.”

It’s all change in the UK chart this week as the top 5 saw three new entries. Techland’s zombie slaughter Dead Island went straight to the number one spot, with new entries Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Resistance 3 earning the number two and number four positions.
Star Fox 64 3D for 3DS went in at number nine.
There were also new releases in the top 40, with American sports title NHL 12 scoring the number 12 spot, and Kinect horror title Rise of Nightmares achieving just number 37.

Richard Lemarchand, designer of Uncharted, will present the keynote speech, “Beauty and Risk: Why I Love Indie Games,” at the IndieCade Conference in October.
Naughty Dog’s Lemarchand joins a line up that includes Braid creator Jonathon Blow, Steve Swink of Shadow Physics fame and Canabalt’s Adam Saltsman. There will also be contributions from Kill Screen’s Jamin Warren and Playable Media director Jane Pinckard.

Newcastle post production firm Mere Mortals has confirmed its decision to cease work in the video game industry.
According to Develop, the company will instead focus of web, television and film projects.
Mere Mortals had worked on titles such as PDC World Championship Darts and World Sports Party, as well as cinema hit Slumdog Millionaire.
