Seems publishers cannot get enough of this online pass idea, with even a single-player RPG like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning getting one.

Electronic Arts’ Kingdoms of Amalur online pass is worrisome, though, signaling a shift we’ve been seeing from publishers — away from holding back things like multiplayer, and toward holding back actual story-oriented content. The Amalur online pass, as Destructoid reports, locks up a full questline made up of seven individual quests; buy the game used and that questline will run you $ 10, the standard going rate on online passes for other titles.

Amalur isn’t the first game to close off some single-player content behind a pass, but it is perhaps the most troubling. RAGE had an online pass included in the game that gave players access to a few hidden sewer areas, but no actual story content. Batman: Arkham City walled off the Catwoman playable content with a pass, but that wasn’t strictly necessary to get the full story out of the game (although it’s a huge bummer not to have).

It’s worth noting that the Mass Effect 3 tie-in armor content, which is part of a cross-promotion between both games, is also tied to the online pass.

As Jim Sterling points out, this doesn’t exactly sound like a vote of confidence in the game’s staying power from publisher EA, since it seems to think people are going to sell the title back to a used game store if the value of that game isn’t somehow reduced. To my mind, though, it’s more troublesome, showing more and more the control over a product post-sale that publishers think they can exert — always at the cost of the consumer.

I mean, think about it. They’re starting to close off portions of the game you paid for behind a code you have to redeem to pay the game you paid for. Hope your Internet connection is solid (or that you have one). Also, say goodbye to lending things to your friends so they can try them.

Yesterday, we reported that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will make use of EA’s Online Pass system, and that used copies of the game will not include access to a specific quest line, similar to Catwoman’s Online Pass exclusion from used copies of Batman: Arkham City. Initially, it looked as though the pass granted access to data already on the disc, however this was later clarified by a post made on the 38 Studios Forums, where community manager Muse informed the public that the quest line is in fact day-one DLC, rather than content actually on the disc.

38 Studios founder Curt Schilling has written his own statement regarding the situation, and it’s just about as frank and honest as we’ve come to expect from Schilling over the last couple of days: “You can argue the merits and effectiveness of it, but right now it’s how it’s done and as someone that’s as invested as I am in this company, I stand by what has happened.”

Schilling goes on to say that the free DLC is intended to be an incentive to early adopters and a reward for “fans and gamers who commit to us with their time and money when it benefits the company.” He does, however, realize that the situation could have been handled differently: “It is my responsibility as the leader to know of things like this and be aware that it would become an issue, I failed on both accounts. No one else is to blame, but at the same time there is no nefarious attempt to do anything under handed here.”

The Xbox Marketplace listing for Resident Evil 6 appears to contain some exceedingly juicy and entirely unannounced secrets about Capcom’s upcoming thriller. If the listing is to be believed, Leon and Chris’ latest adventure will include 2-player couch co-op, 6-player online co-op and 8-player “online multiplayer,” which we’re assuming will be some sort of group Mercenaries exercise.

What’s even more astounding is all of this information is just out there, floating around the Internet. We didn’t have to collect masks or unlock a blood-filled casket or find key cards or anything. For now, we’re cautiously taking everything we read with a grain of salt, even if it is the Xbox Marketplace. We’ve also reached out to Capcom for confirmation of these features.

PSM3′s reporting that the unannounced God of War IV will feature an online co-op mode.

Spoilers for God of War III below.

The UK mag, which reported in April last year that the sequel would launch in 2012, said it will have an online co-op mode featuring Kratos and his dead brother Deimos.

The full rumour, read in its latest issue (via Sillegamer), says: “Why is it hot? It’s bringing double Kratos to the series. GOW4 was confirmed to PSM3 mid-2011 by a reliable source, and rumours point to a multiplayer twist. Mad idea? Online co-op with a (possibly) dead Kratos and (very) dead brother Deimos teaming up to escape the afterlife.”

In March 2011, developer Sony Santa Monica posted a job listing looking for a “senior online programmer” to join the GoW team.

The franchise’s last big release was God of War III in March 2010 for PS3, with spin-off Ghost of Sparta coming out in the tail end of that same year for PSP from Ready at Dawn.
