Let Sony sell you on the PlayStation Vita

We’ve talked about Sony’s new handheld plenty, but we’re not a pair of slickly-produced CG commercials now, are we? If anybody’s going to give you the straight dope on the PlayStation Vita, it’s surely the good people at Sony.

Being a team composed of ex-media, the PlayStation Blog dudes have been sorely missing a podcast for some time, leaving Major Nelson to eat their lunch. Last month, however, PlayStation US social media guys Sid Shuman, Jeff Rubenstein, and Rey Gutierrez teamed up with product evaluator (and known swell guy) Nick Suttner to create the “Official PlayStation Blogcast.”

Beyond rapping about games, the guys do the occasional interview, highlight especially interesting PlayStation content (the incredible XMB theme above, for instance), and this week they’re kicking off their “Origin stories” series on the game industry. The guys also have an insider eye into the goings on behind some of PlayStation’s neatest stuff, so it behooves you to give them a shot.

An image has surfaced showing what is claimed to be a new version of the PlayStation Network.

A user named Afrotravis sent Gamersthirst what is alleged to be a screengrab of the overhauled PSN, reportedly made accessible to select beta testers – check it out below.

It’s not clear whether the supposed revamp is to the Network’s web presence or that accessible through the console; look to the top of the image for what looks a lot like a browser toolbar.

That said, in the upper right you’ll notice what looks like a very stripped-down XMB.

It all tastes a bit odd, and would probably benefit from a cupful of salt. Thanks, monu-mental.

According to Joystiq, the PlayStation 3 version of Saints Row: The Third is identical to the PC and Xbox 360 versions. At E3 2010, Sony had promised an exclusive multiplayer mode using the game’s “signature weapon”.

This is the second high-profile exclusive content deal to seemingly fall through, with Battlefield 3 players winning a week-long DLC exclusivity deal instead of a promised free copy of Battlefield 1943.

Colin Sebastian, an RW Baird analyst, believes that Sony will launch its next PlayStation before Microsoft launches its next Xbox. This is in contrast with the rumor that the next Xbox will launch in 2013. There is also a rumor that Sony Studios is already working on PlayStation 4 titles.

Sebastian said, “I doubt they will be ready for launch in 2013. Between Sony and Microsoft, we expect Sony to be first to market perhaps as early as 2013, but more likely in 2014. There is still a lot of investment for both companies to recoup in the current generation.”

The year head start for the Xbox 360 has helped Microsoft maintain its lead over the PlayStation 3. Sony launching first would give them the advantage next generation. However launching first does not always mean an automatic win, since there are other factors as well, including price, games and marketing.

All 615 GAME and Gamestation retail outlets will offer PlayStation Network downloads and subscriptions from today.

We are delighted to be expanding PSN digital gaming into all our UK stores,” said group commercial strategy director Tricia Brennan.

“Our reward card data shows that we are introducing new customers to digital gaming. As many digital downloads are smaller than full games, with lower prices, we are also seeing customers choosing to buy more frequently.”

Playstation Home

PlayStation Home was a hugely anticipated feature for console fans, one that ultimately garnered mixed reviews and apathetic affection. Due to the reception, Sony has decided to reinvent the game lobby-slash-virtual-world to incorporate the best of theme parks, MMOs, and social networks.

When it relaunches this fall, PlayStation Home will look radically different, resembling something like a sleek mall with plenty to do and faster functionality for those who want to get right to their games. But between playing commercial titles, gamers are encouraged to hang out for a while, which is where MMO elements come into play.

The new Home has a number of districts, as an amusement park would, and in them players can pick up quests, go on treasure hunts, and explore these video game-themed zones to find hidden mysteries. Sony also promises that it will incorporate persistent, ongoing stories, similar to those you’d find in MMOs, such as an alien invasion that affects all of the areas.

Sony is hoping that the 23 million Home users will embrace this new experience and form stronger social connections through it.

Ninja Gaiden 3‘s obsession with conveying the feel of a katana — while it slices the flesh off a man’s bones — is now supplemented with another vicarious attack. What does it feel like when a glowing, squishy ball bounces off a skull?

Team Ninja has announced PlayStation Move support for the PS3 version of Ninja Gaiden 3, presumably enabling spirited swings and forceful bops in your offensive arsenal. Studio lead Yosuke Hayashi claims that it will “bring players even closer to the game’s protagonist Ryu Hayabusa,” which is a particularly unfortunate occurrence if you also happen to be generic soldier, a demon, an evil ninja or … anything that’s alive, really.

Ninja Gaiden 3 is set to slice up PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners in early 2012. A Wii U version is also in the works.
