Saints Row: The Third Review

by Salat on November 15, 2011 · 0 comments

The press packet for Saints Row: The Third promised that every mission, no matter what, would have a “holy Sh** moment”, a big, memorable, over-the-top scene guaranteed to wow the player and make them laugh out loud at the same time. The marketing has had the same theme, promising again and again that whatever else the game may be, it will be absurd, exaggerated, morally deplorable and, in every way that counts, the thematic opposite of the Grand Theft Auto games the Saints Row series initially cloned. I am happy to report that Saints Row: The Third is every bit as completely ridiculous as promised.

Think of it like the video game equivalent of kids wondering if Batman could beat up Luke Skywalker while having sex with She-Ra, and then actually drawing the comic making the case. Every single moment in the game – even the boring moments – feels like the developers were sitting around brainstorming the craziest stuff they could think of and then asking a 5 year old pyromanic to poke holes in it. The result is a violent, vulgar, profane to the extreme camp masterpiece that is difficult to believe until you play it.

It may not be be *best* game of 2011 – to claim otherwise would be to risk a flogging from angry Skyrim fans – but it is my favorite, and absolutely the most fun I’ve had all year.

Saints Row: The Third: – Xbox 360 (Reviewed), Playstation 3, PC
Developer: Volition, Inc.
Publisher: THQ
Release Date: November 15, 2011
MSRP: $ 59.99

The Story

Saints Row: The Third picks up some years after the end of Saints Row 2. Having turned themselves into popular media icons, they hawk everything from an energy beverage (Saints’ Flow), a line of comic books, even a brand of condoms. The game begins with a ridiculous advertisement for Saints’ Flow, and then turns into the silliest heist ever. The Saints have been hired by a cheesy TV Actor to give him a crime ride-along for a role he’s trying to get. You and your crew almost pull it off. Almost.

The Saints are then kidnapped and taken aboard a cargo jet where they’re introduced to a shadowy criminal group called ‘The Syndicate’ that are planning to move into Stillwater. After escaping, you’ll engage in a firefight on the plane during which a critical series-changing event happens, jump from the jet without a parachute, have a free-fall firefight with equally parachute-free enemies, and somehow manage to land unscathed in the new city of Steelport, a decaying, former industrial city now hopelessly violent and corrupt, that serves as Syndicate HQ.

The important thing is that you’ve just enjoyed a 30 minute prologue during which you robbed a bank, blew up a plane, killed a bunch of skydiving gunmen and landed safely in a new city. All of which is tame compared to what you’ll get up to when the game begins proper.

Saints Row: The Third Review Roundup

by Salat on November 15, 2011 · 0 comments

Saints Row: The Third is out now. I’ve spent about an hour with it, and I was surprised at just how f–king bats–t crazy it is. But you don’t care what I think; here’s what the reviews are saying:

Official Xbox Magazine — 9.5

Feels like a game whose designers have found the note-perfect tone for the series while also wielding their own talents with razor-sharp precision. It’s the game Volition – a studio whose successes go back 15 years to the original Descent – was born to make.

GameFront — 90/100

Saints Row: The Third isn’t the best game of the year. It hurts to say that, because one wants one’s favorite thing to be the best thing also, but OK, it’s not the best game. However, it is absolutely glorious, and for all its faults, it’s always fun and always insane. Buy it. Buy it now. In fact, stop reading this review and open your wallet, OK?

The Escapist — 4.5 stars

Steelport is a glorious sandbox with fun around every corner and the well-written story and easy-to-use design make Saints Row 3 a fantastic package.

Game Informer — 9.0

As much as the game made me laugh, it wouldn’t deserve such high praise without solid gameplay at its core. It may be easy to get distracted by the nonsense occurring onscreen, but Saints Row: The Third is thrilling as an action game. Missions vary wildly, and they’re almost all bombastic, popcorn-movie affairs.

GameSpot — 8.5

Fantastic missions, outrageous weapons, and awesome vehicles make the open-world mayhem of Saints Row: The Third an absolute blast.

IGN — 8.5

Saints Row: The Third gives the people what they want and drops us into an open world adult theme park where we can treat ourselves to delightful acts of bloodshed and perversion. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and only asks that you don’t, either.

1up — B+

Lackluster side-content notwithstanding, Saints Row: The Third is so crazy and over-the-top that you can’t go wrong with this game — provided that you’re the sort that would appreciate the game’s knowingly juvenile sense of humor.

Giant Bomb — 4 stars (out of five)

It is a game specifically designed for annihilation junkies, those who can embrace the idea of an infantile playground of seemingly infinite obliterative pleasures. For those who prefer their games a tad less absurdly–perhaps needlessly–violent, any number of other games this fall will likely suit your fancy just fine.

CVG — 7.0

Some amazing moments… and some truly abysmal ones. Saints Row: The Third is wildly imaginative and frequently entertaining, but a lack of technical polish and weak combat overshadow its achievements.

Destructoid — 7.0

A game that aimed to be the most outrageous chapter of the series has ended up, if anything, as the least remarkable.

It may be well overdue, but Ian Livingstone has revealed that recent developments should mean the formal Government response to his Skills Review will be “more positive” than the industry was “previously expecting”.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, the Eidos life president said: “I can confirm that the delay in the Government’s response to Next Gen is for a good reason.”

Whilst he would not elaborate further, it is believed that comments made last week by the Prime Minister have given the industry’s case renewed momentum in anticipation of the official statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Major Mayhem Review

by Salat on November 13, 2011 · 0 comments

Adult Swim continues its tongue-in-cheek game series with this action platformer, seemingly inspired by 80’s action films.
You play the roll of Major Mayhem. A one man army in the mold of Rambo, on a mission direct from the President of the USA, to rid the world of the Evil Villains Corporation and their giant death [...]

Rocket Riot Review

by Salat on November 12, 2011 · 0 comments

Chillingo’s Rocket Riot is yet another twin-stick shooter, but with a unique graphical style…
Retro-style graphics are right up my street. Particularly when that style is mixed with 3D, and Rocket Riot does not disappoint. As each level starts, it is presented to you in full and look like something from the NES days. Then the [...]

Poker Pals review

by Salat on November 11, 2011 · 0 comments

I am a sucker for wasting time playing asynchronous games on my iPhone and iPad. Word games usually do the trick, and I have played Words With Friends, Hexalex and Wordfeud for months now. Needless to say I have been waiting for something fresh to come along that doesn’t require too much of the player [...]
