Rising

One of the biggest selling points of Gears of War 3 for me was its multiplayer modes, and specifically how greatly it felt as though Epic Games had improved upon the Gears experience from its first two outings. Gears 1 and Gears 2 both had compelling maps, but all of them always broke down to the same Quake-style scenario: sprint for nearest power weapon, proceed to dominate unfortunate losers who didn’t get there first.

Gears 3, on the other hand, felt as though it managed to mitigate the power of the game’s map-based heavy weapons, like the Mulcher, Boom Shot and Longshot sniper rifle, through clever design. Sure, you might snag the Oneshot, a mounted instant-kill cannon, at the top of the map on trenches, but your firing angles were severely limited. You might snag the Torque Bow in Hotel, but only about 30 or 40 percent of the map is the interior portion, which has lots of cover and objects to obstruct your shots.

In judging the latest Gears of War 3 map pack, Fenix Rising, I’ve tried to determine if the new maps match that level of design quality that I felt the on-disc map offering met. And for the most part, while Fenix Rising’s five maps — four new ones and one rehash from Gears 1 — meet that criteria, they don’t seem quite as clever as earlier offerings. That doesn’t make them a bad deal, and Epic has thrown in a few other things to encourage big fans to buy this map pack. If you like Gears multiplayer, this is just more good stuff for you.

Gears of War 3: Fenix Rising Map Pack: Xbox 360 (reviewed)
Developer: Epic Games
Released: Jan. 17, 2012
MSRP: 800 MS Points ($ 10)

The Fenix Rising pack, which is the third of four content drops available to Gears 3 Season Pass holders, brings five maps that are accessible on all three multiplayer modes — that’s the standard competitive multiplayer, the cooperative Horde mode and the cooperative Beast mode. The bulk of content alone makes the asking price of $ 10 a pretty good deal, given that $ 2 is fairly reasonable. Each map has its strengths, and all of them are supposed to be themed after protagonist Marcus Fenix’s life and his family. To that end, they all have a sort of “facility” feel — one’s the academy where Marcus went to school, one’s a fortress where he was stationed, one is the prison where he was incarcerated.

The downfall of each map is that they tend to be twisting, labyrinthine experiences; usually there are indoor and outdoor portions, and usually to get anywhere, you’ll be passing around blind corners and through lots of cover. These are good setups for maps — they all play well and are fun — but they also have a lot of similarities to one another.

I love the way words that have plenty of nuance in their native tongue become completely subjected to whatever the first context foreigners heard the word in other languages. Like “Raiden”, for instance. In Japanese, it just means Thunder and Lightning, but I can’t help but think of Mortal Kombat every time I hear it.

Anyway, Raiden ws the playable protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2. He showed up in Metal Gear Solid 4 as a weird cyborg ninja thing, and now with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance we get to find out how that happened. I’m assuming it was the result of an accident caused when he crammed the words vengeance and revenge into one another.

By the way, with ‘Revengeance’, the stealth mechanics have been completely abandoned. If you ask me, it’s kind of like releasing a Zelda game set in the Mushroom kingdom. But whatevs, androgynous Anime cyborgs are fun!

Gaikai powers streaming Dead Rising 2 demo

by Salat on November 10, 2011 · 0 comments

We’re never going to to be comfortable with the kind of alchemy Gaikai is capable of. Capcom has partnered with the company to offer a demo of Dead Rising 2, right in your browser. You’ll be so impressed you won’t even mind it’s a year late!

It’s the actual game, inside a browser window. Being a demo, there are some restrictions: you can’t save, and you can only play for 30 minutes. But it’s still enough to give you a taste of the game, and to be really impressed with Gaikai.

In the world of Dead Rising, if you’re bit by a zombie, you’re a goner. Unless, of course, you take a daily dose of Zombrex. Every day Frank West is running around Fortune City, he’ll need a dose of the stuff — and it doesn’t come cheap. Buying it comes at a steep 50,000 dollars a pop. But, if you look carefully, free Zombrex can be found scattered throughout the city. Join us as we list all the known locations of hidden Zombrex in Dead Rising: Off the Record.

Don’t forget to stop by our huge text and video walkthrough of this Dead Rising expansion, or if you’re looking for more extras, stop by the cheats page.

Zombrex Locations

  1. The first Zombrex you’ll find while playing the main campaign is at Roy’s Mart, after fighting the looters. It’s in the backroom, you can’t miss it.
  2. More Zombrex can be purchased at the looter shops, one in Fortune City Park, and the other in the Royal Flush. These cost a steep 50,000 each.
  3. An easy Zombrex can be found early in the game. Take the elevator to the Safe House roof, and run around to the back of the elevator room. There’s hidden Zombrex just ready to be taken.
  4. Find another free Zombrex in the Jump Space 7 Restaurant, in the Uranus Zone. Run up to the second floor and break a window to reach a small platform on the ledge. Follow it to find a hidden Zombrex.
  5. More Zombrex can be found in the tunnels, underneath the entrance to the Silver Strip. Run down the platform from ladder, the Zombrex is just on the ground, by itself.
  6. Zombrex can also be found in Security Box #999, accessed in the Bank Vault in the Uranus Zone. To find the key, just use the Silver Strip entrance into the Atlantica Casino, where you’ll face a huge statue and a fountain. The key is just in that fountain.
  7. Another Zombrex is inside Security Box #673, again accessed in the Bank Vault inside Uranus Zone. You can find the key in the Fortune City Hotel, on the ground near the double doors leading into the construction area.
  8. Fighting the Mailman Psychopath and defeating him will net you some free Zombrex, too.

Dead Rising: Off The Record Review

by Salat on October 16, 2011 · 0 comments

I was only kind of into the original Dead Rising. While I thought that the time limit was a challenging restriction that added genuine tension, and who can argue with GTA + Zombies! – the save system, stupid AI, ridiculous protagonist and pointless, boring missions made for an ultimately terrible gaming experience. Last year’s Dead Rising 2 improved on Dead Rising somewhat, notably by introducing the sick game show we know for a fact would be made reality if zombies ever actually turned out to exist, and the concept of anti-zombie medication Zombrex, but DR2 it retained enough of what I didn’t like about the original that I could barely bring myself to finish it.

Even so, I really wanted to love Dead Rising 2: Off The Record. Red Dead Redemption proved that the GTA + Zombies concept, when done right, makes for a fantastic game. Off The Record was supposed to have a few new tricks that promised or, at least pinky-swore, that this might be the fun Dead Rising game I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, even the surprisingly excellent Sandbox Mode couldn’t overcome the continuation of the series’ congenital problems.

Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
Platforms: PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 [Reviewed]
Developer: Capcom and Blue Castle
Publisher: Capcom
Released: Oct. 11, 2011
MSRP: $ 40.00 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

The Basics

As befits a cheap $ 40.00 cash-in, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is not Dead Rising 3. Think of it as Dead Rising: Brotherhood if that makes things clearer. It’s a re-imagined version of the plot of Dead Rising 2 with original Dead Rising protagonist Frank West in place of Chuck Greene. Set in Vegas analogue Fortune City, Frank is somewhat down on his luck after the events of the first game and is reduced to participating in Terror Is Reality, the game show from Dead Rising 2 in which people compete to kill zombies for money.

The plot largely follows DR2, as a massive city-wide zombie outbreak interrupts the game and the non-infected must fight to survive. Frank, in place of Chuck Greene, must find out what caused the outbreak and put a stop to it before the military arrives in three days to basically nuke the city.

Changes from Dead Rising 2, in addition to Frank West, include new missions and cut scenes, the return of annoying photo missions from Dead Rising, and an official Sandbox mode. Also, in place of Chuck Greene’s infected daughter who requires regular doses of the Zombrex drug to keep from turning, now Frank West is revealed to be infected.

Story Mode

If you’ve already played Dead Rising 2 in its original form, then the story mode won’t have too many surprises to you. Yes, there are new missions and cut scenes, but you’ll interact with characters from DR2, and the endings are similar. You also have to complete the stupid photography missions that made the first game feel so tedious at times. The game retains the time limit from previous games; you’ll have 3 days of game time to complete objectives and resolve the plot before the military comes to destroy everything. Because Frank is infected, you’ll need to periodically locate Zombrex to keep from turning. Luckily, once you find Zombrex you can just take it, making for a much less annoying fetch quest than having to constantly deliver the drug to Greene’s daughter in DR2.

Zombie killing remains as awesome as ever. You grab whatever you can find lying around – hammers, cabinets, cardboard boxes, stuffed animals, etc – and swing it at the nearest zombie. Blood splatters, the undead moan and all is well with the world. There are also some amazing weapons you’ll eventually get to use. Adding to that is the sense of humor that always stays just on this side of ‘too obvious’. Funny weapons, costumes and the like keep things laughable and fun, at least until you start getting bored.

Frank West remains the same unlikeable ass he was in Dead Rising, albeit a humbled, down-on-his-luck version. He comes off like a pro-wrestler gone to seed, driven by desperation into what amounts to full-time bullsh*tting as a career. It’s supposed to add a grim coda to his earlier adventures, but the game just botches the portrayal and it just gets tedious. Which is to say, you are going to lose interest in playing as Frank rather quickly. On the bright side, he looks like Elvis and doesn’t tell literally every person he meets that he’s a photojournalist.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record Cheats

by Salat on October 7, 2011 · 0 comments

Known for zombie-related atrocities, the Dead Rising series is back to have a little fun with original protaganist Frank West. Going for the wild and wacky routine, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is more of a side-story than full game, as the budge price can attest to. Explore the same Fortune City, but in an all new story, with new combo weapons, and a new retro sci-fi themed amusement park. Gird yourself for the goof as Frank West clubs, stomps, and splatters his way through the hungry dead.

Zombies getting you down? Check out Game Front’s very own Dead Rising 2: Off the Record walkthrough. For everything we can find extra about this expansion to Dead Rising 2, look below.
