Watch The Untold Story of Rock Band (Video)

by Salat on November 28, 2011 · 0 comments

Hard to believe now that rhythm gaming genre has fallen on such hard times, but it’s been 4 years since Rock Band first appeared and bestrode the bloated market like a drugged out, classic rock colossus. Harmonix would like you to take a second to remember what it all means, and they’ve produced the following video to do so. Yeah, it’s a bit awkward watching someone injure their arm patting themselves on the back for something that is in rapid decline, but Rock Band is still a pretty fun good time, so I’ll let them have this one.

Black Rock Studios officially closed its doors today, Eurogamer reports

The developer of the tragically underappreciated Split/Second has officially closed its doors today according to its parent company, Disney Interactive Studios.

The explosive racing title Split/Second (or Split/Second: Velocity depending on your territory) was critically lauded, but underperformed at retail after it released in a month dominated by Red Dead Redemption (which performed far beyond anyone’s predictions.)

The studio was announced to be closing months ago, but did not officially close until today. There is currently no word on what the studio had been doing since Split/Second 2 was cancelled in December 2010.

Update: New information from Eurogamer points to a F2P RTS called Champions Alliance as the project Black Rock was working on just before closure. It was apparently akin to League of Legends.

Thanks, Eurogamer!

Pure and Split/Second developer Black Rock Studios is set to be closed down by parent company Disney Interactive, according to media reports. It was revealed a couple of months ago that the Brighton, UK-based developer was facing redundancies, with the aim to see the studio “reduced to a single game team.” Now news site Eurogamer is reporting that the development team is being completely shut down, with an anonymous source explaining that Disney handled the …

Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock Studios has had an odd career trajectory, having been acquired and absorbed wholesale by Valve after gaining no small amount of attention for its zombie-slaying multiplayer title. The studio re-materialized last March under the supervision of original CEO Michael Booth, and presumably started work on something big — as evidenced by a hiring push this past February, and their opening of a shiny new studio space. Today, one big detail about said project came to light: It’s going to be published by THQ, and released in 2013.

In a press release announcing the partnership, Turtle Rock COO Phil Robb said, “This project is the most ambitious thing we’ve ever attempted,” later adding, “We’re going to take the first person shooter experience to a whole new level, and we can’t wait to show the game for the first time in the months ahead.” The announcement lines up with a client list released by talent representation firm Verve (as discovered by supererogatory), which says GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Four Brothers writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett are working with Turtle Rock on a brand new IP for a “top-tier publisher.”

No more specific window was given for the game’s proper announcement, though the press release explains that the title will not be shown off at E3. Or is that just to throw us off the scent? Nice try, you crafty press release, you. As for any complications this might cause concerning Valve’s current relationship with the studio remains to be seen — a THQ representative told us, “To clear up any confusion, we are getting clarification on the Turtle Rock/Valve relationship – and should have that info later today.” Stay tuned!

JoystiqTHQ publishing re-formed Turtle Rock Studios’ next FPS originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 May 2011 12:08:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

One in Five Windows Users Rock Windows 7

by Salat on January 4, 2011 · 0 comments

Most Windows users feel that Windows 7 is what Vista should have been all along. That sentiment is underscored by the fact that just under 21 percent of Windows users are now sitting pretty with Microsoft’s latest and greatest, Arstechnica reports.

Vista, which never touched anything approaching a 20 percent share of Windows users, is now installed on a little over 12 percent of Windows machines. That means XP still reigns supreme with a 56.72 percent share of the Windows market, though that’s 10 percent less than where it started in January 2010.

Windows 7 is the only Windows OS that gained share in 2010, jumping up by 13 percentage points. Vista, meanwhile, lost a little over 5 percentage points.

Have you made the switch to Windows 7? What OS(es) are you running at home?
