We’ve already reported on analysts Michael Pachter’s concerns about falling Wii software sales. Today, Gamasutra’s Matt Matthew’s wrote an excellent piece that crunches Wii software numbers and compares them to sales trends of both current and past systems.
The bottom line: despite having sold five million more consoles than previous leader PS2 had at this point in its lifecycle, Wii software sales are falling well behind PS2’s sale curve.
However, there’s a lot more to the story, so please head over to Gamasutra and check out the story.

Ubisoft’s projected sales for its first financial quarter of this year are ?160 million, a 93 per cent leap from last year’s ?89m.
The estimate exceeds Ubisoft’s own hopes of raising ?145 million. The French publisher prescribed the rise to Splinter Cell: Conviction’s 1.9 million sales, Assassin’s Creed 2 continuing to shift a healthy number of units, and help from Just Dance and Avatar.
However, some ?9 million, the bulk of the increase over the previous projection, steams purely from what the publisher calls a “favourable” exchange rate.

Gamers think more positively towards a title if they know it has reviewed well, according to a new EEDAR survey.
The results of the study, conducted with SMU Guildhall, presented PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies to 188 people split into different groups – one shown positive reviews, another critical ones, and the third shown no reviews.
At the end of the play session, all involved were offered a choice of either the game or in cash. 20 per cent more of those players told Plants vs Zombies had reviewed well chose the game than did those told the opposite, and all told were more than twice as likely to pick the game.

Sega West president Mike Hayes has stated that the espionage RPG, Alpha Protocol, won’t be receiving a sequel. In an interview with CVG, the executive plainly expressed, “Let’s speak very commercially; the game hasn’t sold what we’ve expected, therefore we won’t be doing a sequel.” He continued that the game didn’t have enough to get into that “upper echelon” of RPGs, because the amount “you need to invest to get there is so large because RPGs are naturally big projects.”
The Obsidian-developed game suffered numerous delays, alleged tweaks and eventually launched this year to middling reviews (across the industry). It seems Alpha Protocol will have a future akin to that other oft-overlooked espionage classic: Leonard Part 6.
Alpha Protocol sequel denied, low sales to blame originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jul 2010 18:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Analyst Wedbush Securities has altered its predictions for the videogame industry over the next few years, following a fairly troubling set of figures from the most recent NPD results.
Michael Patchter’s outfit had previously predicted 5 per cent growth for 2010, but Wedbush now claim sales will remain flat for the rest of this year.
However, its outlook for 2011 and beyond is more rosy. Patchter forecast 13 per cent growth next year, up from his original estimate of 7 per cent. 2012 and 2013 remain unchanged at 8 per cent and 6 per cent respectively.

Microsoft’s Xbox sales in Japan have been nothing short of laughable when compared to how other systems fare in the electronic heavy region but with the recent redesigned 360 and release of Monster Hunter Frontier, the system has gotten a much needed boost in sales.

In the week previous to the release of the redesigned 360, the system had sold about 2,060 units in total. Compare that to the first week of availability for the redesign and sales have shot up to 17,370, 15k of those sales were of the new system.
The newly designed console was sharing the same week of release as the wildly popular (in Japan) Monster Hunter Franchise’s debut of Frontier, a title exclusive to the 360 in Japan. The game placed at the top of the software charts with 93k units sold.
As good news as this is for the 360, it still pales in comparison to it’s competitors sales in Japan with the PS3 (19,578), PSP (23,257), the Wii (19,115) all outselling th 360. the DSi (41,676) was the best selling machine last week.
