Two Terran players vied for GSL supremacy Friday night as MMA took on IMMvp at Blizzcon 2011. Normally, seeing a TvT match-up in the finals has fans yelling “Terran is OP” but Friday night they were just shouting MMA’s name. The Anaheim Convention Center was packed to the gills with Starcraft fans who wanted to see this epic match-up. This is the first time a GSL finals event has been held outside of Korea and it was one for the history books.

IMMvp is the mighty Terran player who defeated IMNestea and FruitDealer in “Gisado’s Challenge” matches. He was favored to defeat MMA in the GSL finals, but IMMvp got more than he bargained for when he took on the vicious MMA. After a delay due to technical difficulties, the first game was finally underway and MMA opened up with a proxy barracks and factory. He correctly guessed that his opponent would go for a fast expand and he hit it with siege tanks before IMMvp could react. He was up one to nothing.

In the second game MMA came strong again and used Marines and Marauders to keep IMMvp’s Siege Tanks on the defensive. MMA caught a huge group of tanks before they could siege up and IMMvp never really recovered. IMMvp did manage to come back and win the third game as his tanks rolled over the heavy bio and fast expand of IMMvp.

However, IMMvp just couldn’t keep the momentum going as he wound up losing the fourth game after trading bases with his opponent. And finally in an amazing game 5 MMA used superior medvac play and even nukes to defeat IMMvp. It was an incredible match-up to end an incredible night at Blizzcon.

Sean “Day[9]” Plott, co-founder of Day9.TV, popular internet television host and PC Gamer’s “2010 Gamer of the Year,” has recruited the most prestigious high tech companies in the world to compete in the ultimate gamer showdown: the After Hours Gaming League.

The battlefield? StarCraft 2.

This event, which starts on June 30th and runs for 9 (get it?) consecutive weeks, is predicted to attract hundreds of thousands of viewers globally.

Organized and hosted by Sean “Day[9]” Plott, this event is part of a push to introduce “eSports” or competitive gaming into mainstream culture.

Day[9] said:

We are talking about one of the hardest computer games in the world being played by some of the smartest people in the world. I can’t think of a more exciting combination to watch.

Steven Bartel, a software engineer at Dropbox and its team captain said:

StarCraft 2 requires dedication, critical thinking, and split-second decision making. That is why it has become so popular in the tech community. We can’t wait to see some of the best competition the community has to offer tested in battle.

In our recent interview with veteran eSports commentator Diggity, we discussed what it would take to make eSports in North American reach the level it has attained in Asia.

Day[9] said:

ESports is in its infancy in North America, compared to Asia, where eSports has had a fanatical following for years. In South Korea, StarCraft is a national obsession like baseball or football. Gamers are celebrities and professional matches are shown on prime time television.

According to Day[9], eSports hasn’t taken off as quickly in the West, partly because there has been a stigma that video games are bad for your brain. He points out that there are games, like StarCraft, that are highly strategic and complex and that are played by the most educated, intellectual people.

In our interview, Diggity stated that members of the community need to take an active role in helping establish the eSports scene in North America. With a community member as influential as Day[9] spearheading this tournament, the movement can take a significant step forward this summer.

Day[9] said:

We believe the After Hours Gaming League, featuring top tech talent, will showcase some of the country’s best and brightest gamers, illustrate the potential of gaming, and ultimately build respect for eSports.

You can watch the tournament live at www.day9.tv or www.afterhoursgaming.tv every Thursday starting June 30. Previously aired shows will be available on demand at day9tv.blip.tv.

StarCraft 2 Map — Left 2 Die

by Salat on April 8, 2011 · 0 comments

Left 2 Die is a cooperative take on the Outbreak mission from the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty campaign that supports up to two players. Similar to Outbreak, the action takes place in a terran colony that has been overrun by a zerg infestation. The game shifts between two phases: a night phase and a day phase.

At night, players must protect their base against waves of infested terran, including special zerg units including the kaboomer and stank. During the day, the attacks on player bases cease, allowing players to venture out to destroy infested terran settlements scattered across the map. In order to achieve victory in Left 2 Die, players need to eradicate all traces of the zerg virus.

Here’s some footage of a complete playthrough:

You can download Left 2 Die directly through Battle.net. Simply log onto StarCraft 2, select Multiplayer, then “Join a game” under the Custom games tab, and search for “Left 2 Die.”

After weeks of beta-testing, Blizzard has officially released three StarCraft 2 mods, available in-game through battle.net. Though distinct in gameplay, they all share on thing in common: they are parodies of other companies’ intellectual property.

Aiur Chef

Ah, the protoss homeworld of Aiur. It just hasn’t been the same since it was reduced to a smoking ball of ash and corpses. Fortunately, the planet’s culture lives on: through its cuisine.

Supporting up to eight players, Aiur Chef sends culinary enthusiasts on scavenger hunts for ingredients to complete recipes in round-based challenges. Mixing inventory management, tactical ability deployment, and raw speed, this mod blends skill and strategy into a tasty stew of psionic fun.

StarJeweled

StarCraft meets Bejeweled: players match jewels to generate resources–and spend them to attack with StarCraft II units, countering enemy forces and destroying their base.

Supporting solo vs. A.I., co-op vs A.I., and player vs. player, this mod, for up to four players, improves upon the well-known Bejeweled game by introducing StarCraft elements. StarCraft makes every game 200% more betterer.

Left 2 Die

A cooperative mod that pits players against waves of zerg infested, Left 2 Die is akin to a multiplayer version of the Outbreak mission from the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty campaign.

During the night, players must protect their bases against infested terran hordes, including “special” infested like the kaboomer–sound familiar, Left 4 Dead players? During the day, players take the offensive to eradicate infested settlements and win the game.
