Update: As promised, we’ve add the official North American midnight launch event for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

The event will take place at Fry’s Electronics at 10800 Kalama River Avenue in Fountain Valley, CA, with activities starting at 9.00pm PST on July 26, and sales of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beginning at midnight.

Local game stores across the US may have ones that are less “official” than this one, so you may wish to check first before just showing up.

Original story follows the break.

Original: Blizzard has announced five official European launch events for the release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

Starting at midnight on July 26/27, retailers in France, Germany, Russia, Sweden and the UK will open their doors to players who want to be the first to purchase and play the sci-fi strategy title.

The midnight UK launch will take place at GAME, located at 100 Oxford Street, London.

Doors will open at 11.00pm and attendees will have an opportunity to meet with a member of the StarCraft II development team who will be present to welcome players and sign their copies.

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the standard or Collector’s Edition of the game which contains the following bonus items in case you forgot:

  • The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game
  • An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor’s dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set
  • A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director’s commentary, and more

Similar launch events will be held internationally for players in other regions, and you can get the European list here.

The game’s out on July 27, and when the official US midnight event is announced, we’ll let you know.

StarCraft II has cost quite a pretty penny to develop. The original StarCraft is one of the most popular PC titles of all time, so its no surprise Activision Blizzard has no problem dropping a few bills on the follow up — a whopping 0 million to be exact.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 0 million is just the cost of development for the three-part sequel that will kick off with Wings of Liberty. Marketing costs do not appear to be accounted for in this figure.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has called SC II one of the company's seven pillars of opportunity. Each pillar has suspected earning potential somewhere between the 0 to billion, so a few million in development costs shouldn't hurt…

Big Download has received the final retail system requirements from Blizzard for Starcraft 2, which will begin its real-time strategic war in stores July 27. In typical Blizzard fashion (and similar to the beta), the system specs don’t appear like you’ll need a Hydralisk to cut off an arm and a leg for a PC upgrade.

A collection of character portraits from StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty has been leaked all over the internet with no warning, context, or logical order.  They’re just a big mess of spoilers that ruin many surprises, and add even more mysteries.  Luckily the folks over at IncGamers have identified most of them, and separated the surprises from the ones we already knew about.  So if you want to see the new character portraits for the obvious returning characters like Jim Raynor, Zeratul, and Sarah Kerrigan, head on over to their StarCraft blog.  Since the game takes place four years after the 1998 StarCraft, Raynor is slightly older, drunker, and much more grizzled.  They’ve also redesigned Kerrigan’s pre-Zerg portrait a great deal, and even replaced her dreadlocks with short red hair.

If you don’t want them to ruin all the crazy new spoilers for you, stop about halfway through the post.  They’ve provided a convenient little warning for you.  However, if you’re in the mood for some StarCraft II spoilers, go for it.  Good luck.  I couldn’t resist, and wow, those are some big surprises.  Some of them are pretty awesome surprises, but some of them are really confusing.  It’s not Star Wars prequel crazy or anything, but I’ll have to see how they handle it within the game because they could be doing some pretty crazy stuff here.  StarCraft fans, do you actually want some of these characters to come back?

If you don’t want to spoil anything, you only have to wait until July 27th for the game’s worldwide PC/Mac release anyway.

While StarCraft 2 may benefit from a “robust new 3D graphics-rendering engine,” we didn’t know until recently that the game would be receiving a post-launch patch enabling that other kind of 3D (read: the “needs glasses” kind). In an interview with IGN at a South Korean media event — where, no joke, a StarCraft 2 logo-emblazoned Korean Air plane was unveiled — production director Chris Sagaty explained, “We will be releasing 3D in the first few months, for those Nvidia cards and screens that support it.”

For what it’s worth, an Nvidia rep also told IGN that it’s “optimising for all systems,” so that the 3D support would work on as many systems as possible. We might try to get it working ourselves, if it wasn’t for our sheer terror at the thought of a Zergling flood coming through the screen.
