Click here to read Super Mario 3DS Might Be Out This Year?

When the Nintendo 3DS was first unveiled, we were shown a bunch of trailers from games that barely even existed yet. And even then, saw nothing of a new Mario game. So it’d be sweet if it actually came out this year. More »

While I'm not the retro overlord our own Blake Patterson is, I've always thought it would be super cool to have a cocktail arcade machine. Even though the iPad doesn't have the 30 years worth of pizza grease on it like your typical Pac-Man cocktail table would have, the iPad is a surprisingly good substitute when it comes to face to face single device multiplayer. Where am I going with all this? Well, Super Cosmic Word Snake [$ 2.99] combines so many things I like in an iPad game it's almost like 3V Games built their game off some design document of mine that I haven't even created yet. It's dripping with retro charm, has simple (but incredibly fun) two player single device multiplayer, and even has Game Center.

To start playing, you need to situate the iPad between you and a friend and flip a coin (or somehow determine) who is going to play which side first. As the first player, you're responsible for growing the super cosmic word snake as much as possible. Adding body segments on to the end of said snake is as simple as hitting the 7 letter buttons at the bottom of the screen to make a word. The first letter of the word you form must start with the last letter of the worm itself. The snake then, well, snakes around the screen towards the opposite side.

Player 2 plays on the opposite side of the screen, and using a slider and a button you're able to fire at the word snake. Initially you'll need to shoot asteroids out of the way to get a clear shot, but after that you're home free to unload everything you've got on to the snake. Segments of the snake come in two types, and can be killed in one shot if those segments were added by a three (or less) letter word. Segments added from a four (or more) letter word take two shots to kill.

The game is over when the worm has either been destroyed, or it has made it all the way to the other side. After that, it starts over, and it's up to you whether or not you switch places. There's also a single player mode included as well, although it's substantially less fun than playing with another person. In fact, if you don't have someone to play with, I'd go as far as just suggesting sticking with more typical single player oriented word games.

I really like how retro-ized the whole game is, and how the graphics and interface are designed to look just like a cocktail table arcade machine. It's also neat how the two players play the game so differently, with one player playing what amounts to a retro-style shooter while the other plays a word game. It would be cool to have some additional game modes, or power-ups of sorts that could keep things a little more even if one player was particularly good at their goal, but overall Super Cosmic Word Snake is a surprisingly fun two player iPad game.

Look, I’ve dicked around with the creation tools in LittleBigPlanet2 my fair share, but I’m still consistently surprised by what can me created with them. Case in point: this close-to-perfect build of the first level of the Game Boy’s launch Mario title, Super Mario Land. I must have played this level a hundred times when I was a wee child, since I sucked too much to make it past level world 4; I just played until I lost all my lives over and over and over and over and over again. Anyway, that means I’ve played that first level more times than any other level in any other video game, and so it’s ingrained in my memory even though it’s probably been fifteen years since I’ve touched that game.

And THAT means that I was more than a little disconcerted when I started up JUNKVXXL’s “Mario Land World 1-1 Gameboy graphics 1989″ in LittleBigPlanet 2 to find that it really is a pretty accurate representation of that level. It isn’t perfect, of course; it’s missing the growth shrooms, and you can’t go down the pipe at the beginning of the level, but it’s as close as one could come with LBP2′s tools. Don’t believe me? Video proof:

You can add the level to your queue here.

Super Monkey Ball 3D Review

by Salat on March 27, 2011 · 0 comments

Early adopters of the Nintendo 3DS will no doubt be looking for
software to show off their new system. Super Monkey Ball 3D is one of those games that straddles the line between a “game to own” and a “game to show off.” In 3D, it looks good, and with the proper control scheme, it
plays great. However, it’s lacking in the actual “game” department; instead, you’ll find a short and repetitive single-player mode and decent, but uninteresting multiplayer.

Borrowing from the franchise’s iOS version, Super Monkey Ball 3D features motion sensing as a way to control your monkey in a ball. The motion-sensing works, but sometimes it either feels too accurate or not
accurate enough. Levels with too many tight 90-degree turns are frustrating due to having to move the screen around so much. It makes it hard to sense exactly how fast you’re going when the screen’s viewing angle is shifting around. And with the 3D effect turned on, even to the
most minimal degree, you can forget about playing this game with motion controls. As you may have already heard, if you’re not looking at the 3DS’s top screen directly, you get blurred visuals and flickering. Multiply that several times and that’s what it’s like to play Super Monkey Ball 3D in 3D.

DeceasedPixel has just dropped the price of their universal iOS game (for iPhone, iPad) Super Mega Worm [App Store], a pixellated take on JTR's Death Worm, to zero for a limited time in celebration of the release of the game in the Mac App Store [link] and the launch of the Verizon iPhone.

Super Mega Worm opens with an 8-bit retro cutscene explaining how humans have consumed the earth, and how mother nature now has a bone to pick with us. She tasks her favorite pest exterminator, Wojira the Death Worm, with wiping humans from the earth and restoring balance to the force…you get the idea. It's a nice little setup for the mayhem that is the hallmark of the giant worm game, and an introduction to the glorious mario-like pixel art.

We enjoyed the game in our review back in August and are happy to report that most of the issues we encountered way back when have been addressed in updates from the developer.
