[This week, our partnership with game criticism site Critical Distance brings us a fresh roundup of links compiled by Ben Abraham, on topics including VGA woes, how games portray history, and how archaeology can serve as a vehicle for storytelling.] Let’s start with Rob Zacny’s piece for Gamers With Jobs about the downside to cover mechanics: “Cover produces bland, repetitive action and unconvincing locations. Toward the end of Mass Effect 2, Shepard and her crew …

Ever see a hilarious game image that, taken out of context, could be pure comedy gold? That’s what this feature is about. Check here every week for a new round of Caption This!, where we look at some potentially goofy videogame images and make fun of them. The whole thing works on a three week rotation, so on any given week you will be shown the winner from two weeks ago, vote on who won last week, and be given a new picture to make funny captions for.
There is no prize for the contest other than pure bragging rights as of right now, but it could change if this feature gets enough attention. I’ll keep you guys updated on that. If you know of a funny gaming related picture please email it to me at skelley@vgchartz.com and I just may use it!

See that picture up there?
Think you have a funny caption or text bubble to add?
Just type what you want right here in the comments section, next week I will open voting for this picture, and a winner will be announced in 2 weeks. But remember, there are four rules for safe captioning:
1) You may enter only once.
2) Keep it under 50 words if possible
3) Try to keep it PG-13, some language is fine, but no over-the-top entries please.
4) HAVE FUN!

I love video game stats sites, because they often uncover the most hilariously embarrassing data. Raptr is one such site, and they mined some fun World of Warcraft data after the epic release of Cataclysm last week. Note that because of the way Raptr works, you have to be registered with them before they can track your data. That said, they still came up with some quite amusing information.
1. The top player in the week after Cataclysm hit logged 149 hours. There are 168 hours in a week. That guy spends more time playing WoW than you spend being awake.
2. In an amusing parallel to the real world financial situation, the top 11% of WoWers are responsible for 50% of playtime in the game.
The rest you can check out over on the Raptr blog.

[This week, our partnership with game criticism site Critical Distance brings us a fresh roundup of links compiled by Eric Swain, on topics including player guilt, abstraction in games, and what we can learn from Mass Effect 2 and Civilization V.] We begin at Popmatters’ Moving Pixel’s blog, where early in the week Kris Ligman finished the site’s set of posts focusing on the amateur game Dungeoneer by looking at player guilt. G. Christopher Williams …

A few years ago, someone made Luigi’s Adventure 3, an unofficial riff on Super Mario World that features Luigi. I’ve never played it. Now that I’ve seen it played in an ongoing Let’s Play series at YouTube, I never will. More »
