Where To Get iPad Insurance

Do you ever get nervous about dropping AND possibly breaking your iPad, iPhone, laptop or any other electronics? The reality of it is that your big electronic investment could be gone in an instant. How can you protect your electronics in case of an accident? What is covered by the original warranty? Let me tell you about my story and what you can do to protect your own investments.

iPad + Tile Floor = :(

If you are like me and you bought the iPad as a replacement for a laptop, or to add another internet device around the house or office, or you just love Apple products and “Had to have one!”, then I’m very happy to know that I am not alone. There’s millions of us out there enjoying the new found freedom with this amazing device. Yes, I agree – it’s the future of computing and it’s pretty darn awesome!

But when it came to the standard iPad warranty, I was given a BIG wake-up call. You see, I have 2 kids who also love my iPad. They love it almost as much as I do. One night after dinner they were playing a game on it (Angry Birds – awesome game btw) and my 10 year old son grabbed the iPad from his sister -  they had a minor tug of war over whose turn was next. Of course, after I told them to “hey!becarefulwiththatthing!” they both let go of the iPad and it crashed onto the floor… to the tile floor.

Thankfully, it did not break. (I don’t know if I will be as lucky with the new iPhone 4G though).

My wife was quick to yell at them saying something like “Listen, these things don’t just appear out of thin air! Your Father works hard to afford these things and the only way you can behave is by being disrespectful and ALMOST breaking it!!??” She said some other things too, but I think you get the picture.

Later on my wife asked me about the warranty for the iPad. “What would happen if the kids DID break it?” she asked. “Does it have a 90 day warranty or something?”

Well, I didn’t know. I never thought about it and that’s not such a good thing. I SHOULD know.

So I decided to do some research and here is what I found out.

The Original iPad Warranty

Guess what, in most cases the iPad warranty only provides coverage for manufacturer’s defects. So, the kids dropping or any other accident with it IS NOT covered. If it had broken on the tile floor then I would be out a brand new iPad. That’s not the type of security that I’m looking for. I need something a little bit more robust. So, I did more research.

iPad Warranty vs. iPad Insurance

Here’s where things got interesting. There are third party offerings out there for “iPad Warranty” or “iPad insurance“. Here’s the main differences from what I read:

An iPad Warranty from a third party DOES NOT cover: Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Flood, Natural Disaster, Vandalism, Loss of Software. And if they do replace your iPad, it’s more than likely going to be with a refurbished unit.

iPad InsuranceAn iPad Insurance Plan from a third party (I recommend Worth Ave. Group) DOES cover: Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Flood, Natural Disaster, Vandalism, Loss of Software. They DO NOT provide a replacement (refurbed or not) iPad, instead they offer replacement cost coverage (so you can go buy a brand new iPad)

The insurance policies from Worth Ave. Group are for a full 12 months from the day you sign-up. The policies do come with a $50 deductible but that’s so they can keep their annual premiums so low.

So, if you love you iPad (or iPhone or cell phone or Laptop or iPod Touch or TV) and want to protect your investment then you should check out Worth Ave. Group today.
